I presume the Parkgate street gate is the meet up point. For people not familar with how to get there just get the Tallaght Luas to Heuston station, walk back across the bridge over the liffey and its around 100m on your left.
Anyway the radical history of the park that was published for last years picnic is at
'It happened in the Phoenix Park all in the month of May' http://www.indymedia.ie/article/69521
There's a Shell to Sea fundraiser in the Cobblestone Bar on Sunday 30th- Vincent McGrath and Micheál Ó Seighin are coming up from Mayo to play, and they'll be joined by Mary Mullen, Seán Garvey, The Grimes Family, and a few more luminaries of the traditional music world.
The Cobblestone is in Smithfield which isn't that far from the Phoenix Park.
Tickets are €12, but anyone coming from the a-a-a automatically gets in for a tenner.
For more info phone 086 389 2060, or email Dublin Shell to Sea.
Thought the picnic went very well.
Unfortunately we were at the wrong gate at two o'clock, and by the time we got to the right one (quarter past 2), there was no sign of ye, so we had to have a picnic on our own! Would've liked to have taken part, but all's good, and it was a nice day anyway. Damn Pheonix Park being the biggest one in Europe- couldn't find you anywhere!
Love
You're obviously a bit thick, we were at the parkgate st. entrance til 2.45 then went up to the fort then had a big meeting in the bandstand then an amazing game of football.
I'm glad you had a great day. Don't understand where the negativity is coming from. There's a real problem with an unwelcoming attitude on the left, it's just hard to understand.
Anyway, peace
You joined literally and factually hundreds of millions of workers worldwide who marked Mayday. I'm preparing a report on Mayday globally which I hope to publish tomorrow. The common themes seem to have been
* against precarity.
* against wage inequality.
* for peace and an end to war.
There was surprisingly little trouble or "riot", Berlin as usual seeing the now near traditional clash between extreme left and extreme right kids. After Berlin, Zurich clocked up the most arrests. One very important factor of the most numerous protests, marches, actions and walk-outs were clear anti-americanism. The Pentagon and its suppliers are amongst the main indirect employers of the US economy. Workers globally protested that "permenant war economy" knowing full well they don't make guns or high tech weapons for our security. & no-one may quickly underestimate the mass walkout in the 7 states of the USA which rely most heavily on cheap migrant labour ("labor") by mostly hispanic ethnic workers and some Irish. Russia too saw incredible moblilisations which combined sentimentality for the Soviet regime and its flags and symbols against what is perceived as US led attacks on fundemental social rights to pensions, job security and education.
& ye went on a picnic. cool. next time get a guitar and learn the tunes of the songs sung since Haymarket 1886. Who knows maybe Bono or Geldof will do remixes & help us all out...
the picnic was enjoyable - about 30 or 40 people, a lot of anarchist youth, not too many of the rest youd expect
the greenway cycle arrived there with 7 and left with 5, 1 of which was a sub
weather was good, food was shared, fort was explored by some. light rain came and the AAA (triple A, golden maverick) happened in the bandstand by the zoo. Footy was played, "team cool" seemed to be winning as we left
no hijackings took place
if you ever wondered who that blackdressed shy-guy who turned up at the picnic at the fort was, it was me. I just wanted to thank you all for your hospitality and for you being so nice to me. entering the fort seemed to be a blast and i regret not doing it. the rubarbs was just lovely and i went to the garden in dolphins barn on monday. really nice and inpiring
back in sweden since late saturday and now that i've had some time to digest all the experiences dublin was a kind of a nice city. the traffic situation was just terrible though and castleknock where i stayed was one of the most depressive middle-classish sleeptowns i have ever been in. worse than america in the fifties. :)
J, if you are interested of the activity-house here in malmoe there should be a webpage or blog up and running soon so i could post the adress here if you like.
take care dublin!!
