Anti-GM At The Dail

"Irish farmers, food producers and consumers held a public protest at the entrance to the Dáil at 1.15pm today Wednesday 22 February to call for the Government to ban genetically modified (GM) crops in Ireland, and prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from authorising the release of GMO potatoes in Co. Meath."

"22 February is the deadline set by the EPA for public submissions on a proposal by BASF Plant Science GmbH to conduct a five-year GMO potato experiment at a Teagasc research centre in Summerhill, Co. Meath, located near the Hill of Tara in the Boyne Valley, one of the oldest cultivated sites in Europe. The experiment is due to begin this April and continue till October 2010."

"The introduction of GMO animal feed, seeds, crops, or trees anywhere on this island would, sooner or later, invevitably contaminate all farmers, cause their produce to require a GM label, make them lose market share, put organic farmers out of business, and terminate your right to choose safe GMO-free food - forever. Any introduction of GMO animal feed, seeds, crops, trees, or fish would also contaminate the island's National Parks and numerous protected areas, whose biodiversity is protected by national and European laws."

"In a joint statement made on 26 April 1997, Fianna Fáil spokesman for Agriculture, Joe Walsh T.D., and spokesman for the Environment Noel Dempsey set out their clear position against the development and sale of GM food, crops and livestock."
But in August 1998, after the Irish citizens re-elected Fianna Fáil to power and these two spokesmen became Ministers, the Government issued a Position Paper which stated precisely the opposite policy, claiming that the area of Irish economic interest where biotechnology / genetic modification has the greatest potential is agriculture. To add insult to injury, Fianna Fáil had the audacity to call this complete denial of their election promise "stability and predictability in policy"! Our own government has thus adopted the same Orwellian double-speak of GM companies which call biotechnology "life sciences" and toxic chemicals designed to kill plants "plant protection products".
