F.A.I cup final result Drogheda United 2 Cork City 0

Drogheda United, managed by Paul doolin, finally ended their senior honours famine this afternoon when they defeated Damien Ricardsons League champions Cork City to lift the F.A.I Cup.
Drogs with the cup!
Drogs with the cup!

The match which was played before a crowd of 22,000 started slowly with Cork settling down the better and although the teams went in at half time level, Cork appeared to be in control having had a number of chances on goal.

Drogs came out more determined in the second half and were one up within seven minutes when Whelan scored with an excellent volley. Cork were forced to push up and mounted a sustained attack on the Drogs goal but couldn't find the net despite having three corner kicks and a couple of close in frees. Drogs broke for the second with eight minutes left when Corks centre half Bennet completely misjudged a defensive header to let Drogs striker Declan O'Brien in one on one with the keeper. At that point the game was effectively over as Cork fell apart allowing Drogs in for another couple of chances before full time.
