Drogs win first F.A.I cup!

F.A.I cup final result Drogheda United 2 Cork City 0

Drogheda United, managed by Paul doolin, finally ended their senior honours famine this afternoon when they defeated Damien Ricardsons League champions Cork City to lift the F.A.I Cup.
Drogs with the cup!
Drogs with the cup!

The match which was played before a crowd of 22,000 started slowly with Cork settling down the better and although the teams went in at half time level, Cork appeared to be in control having had a number of chances on goal.

Drogs came out more determined in the second half and were one up within seven minutes when Whelan scored with an excellent volley. Cork were forced to push up and mounted a sustained attack on the Drogs goal but couldn't find the net despite having three corner kicks and a couple of close in frees. Drogs broke for the second with eight minutes left when Corks centre half Bennet completely misjudged a defensive header to let Drogs striker Declan O'Brien in one on one with the keeper. At that point the game was effectively over as Cork fell apart allowing Drogs in for another couple of chances before full time.
........................................................................................
Drogheda United: Dan Connor; Damien Lynch, Graham Gartland, Stephen Gray, Simon Webb; Shane Robinson, Gavin Whelan, Stephen Bradley, Jermaine Sandvliet; Sami Ristila, Declan O’Brien. Subs: Paul Keegan for Bradley 71; Mark Rooney for Ristila 77; Paul Bernard for O’Brien 90 + 2.

Cork City: Michael Devine; Neal Horgan, Alan Bennett, Dan Murray, Greg O’Halloran; Billy Woods, Joe Gamble, George O’Callaghan, Liam Kearney. Subs: Denis Behan for Fenn 62; Colin O’Brien for O’Halloran 83.

And John Glackin played a blinder as he weaved his way through the Garda F.C defence and straight into the penalty area, however he later recieved a red card for dissent and had to be escorted from the pitch!!!!!!!!

Relatively speaking it was a much better and far more entertaining match at the Kildare Street ground.

unfortunately the fai don't allow "non accredited press" to shoot footage of their final so i had to grab a pic off the drogs!

....should that have been, "this is not history, this is sport" ?

...the first sports story? Haven't you got short memories?
Sure only last week I witnessed the best dodging of tackles that any of our Dublin 4 'Trip-up Crown Heroes' could muster on their best days.
Eight homeless people dodged and weaved like the best of them and made it all the way to line without as much as a Garda glove laid on them, even got their touchdown.....a sight to behold it was. The whistle blowers where nowhere to be seen!

There is no truth in the rumour that a representitive of Al Quaida is on his way Streetseen to negotiate a transfer for their services...and anyway the Eight Wonders of the World are priceless. No transfer fee could wrench them from us!
This is not sport, this is history!

Well spotted ABU, but that is sport "related". This is actually sport itself.

A nice opium it is indeed in this crazy, f**ked up world of ours. Nice to escape into it for a while.

How long do you think it will before ye all are ABC?

Quite a lot of sport related stories eg

A Clear Case of Off-Side Dermo
Marx said that religion was the opium of the people but sport has eclipsed man's fascination with the supernatural. Football is the heroin of sport. I can remember the first time I stood with my father on a terrace and watched men chase a bag of wind around a field. I still can be found standing on those steps in all sorts of weather.

Im an old timer as well and its the first sport reprort ive seen. Bout time!! Been meaning to write one for a long time but never got round to it.

Drogs got lucky, but well done nevertheless. The Drog revolution beat the Rebels themselves.

The Drogs revolution.........they have been planning it for a long time ......so its revolutionary sport!!!!

BTW The drogs main strength seems to lie in the left side of defence.....Simon Webb....remember him?
