In the last 4 years, Irish fishing companies have breached agreed European policies on the size of the fleet, and over-fished stock from the West African Atlantic, despite having 250 million "acres" of coastal water of our own.

The largest freezer trawler in the world is Irish owned, the MV Altantic Dawn.

The current issue of Marine Times tells us that ["Marine Minister, Pat the Cope Gallagher T.D., on a visit to Howth Harbour, launched the De-Commissioning Scheme for Irish Fishing Vessels in the Whitefish and Shellfish Sectors, approved by the Government in July. This programme, the most extensive ever announced by the Irish Government, provides €45 million in funding and will remove up to about 25% of the older, larger and more active vessels in the whitefish sector and also remove excess capacity in the scallops fleet. The programme is based on the recommendations contained in the “Decommissioning Requirements for Ireland’s Demersal and Shellfish Fleets” produced by Padraic White in July."]

The Fishering theme doesn't appear often on imc ireland, generally only occassional mention is made of the shameful fact that Irish families enjoy fish fingers caught in African water. But the Africans would probably only eat them instead.

to fish? they are living, breathing, feeling creatures and fishing is a barbaric practice that has no place in the modern world. people serenely sitting on the bank of a river whilst their hooks pierce the cheeks of the animals underneath. certain societies may be still be structurally dependent on fish for nutrition, but that can't be said of the majority of the (over)developed west. causing uneccessary suffering to other beings should be avoided wherever possible. in years to come, i feel we will look at the current treatment of nunhuman animals in the same way we look at slavery - not that i'm trying to equate the two in any facile way, but they both stem from the same unwillingness to treat other beings as we wish to be treated ourselves.
