In August 2003 some anarchists, autonomists and punx fed up paying extortionate rents to greedy landlords (and working shitty precarious jobs to keep him fat) decided enough was enough and occupied a long derelict building on Leeson street.
cork art group "one day collective" occupy derelict city building
http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/wsm/ws/2005/85/corkculture.html
A group of artists in Cork, aware of the lack of affordable work space, took over an empty building in the centre of Cork at the beginning of February. It wasn't just any old building, it was the former home of the Cork School of Music and which has lain empty for nearly 15 years. The building was perfect: loads of space and close to the centre of town. Not to mention the fifteen grand pianos that were found in there that were rotting away from lack of use!
perhaps being inspired by the precedent set by dublin council and Pallas, last year in kilkenny the arts officer, Mary Butler, gave 14 artists in kilkenny the FREE use of the derelict chadwicks building beside the train station. This was used as a live studio, kids visited and met the artists and the artists had it for @ a year till it was pulled down

No Mans Land
http://www.pallasstudios.org/pallas/exhibitions/pallasheights/nomansland.htm
Daniel Cramer, Haris Epaminonda, Angela Huntbach, Tea Makipäa, Karen Land Hansen, Yvonne McGuinness, Ann Mulrooney and Christian Sievers. were the artists who exhibited in the gallery.
Curated by Ann Mulrooney.
"No Mans Land is an ongoing exhibition project which began in 2002, involving eight young European artists. Although working in a variety of media including performance, sound, photography and drawing, all in some way are operating from a sense of displacement and an ambiguity relating to how the self fits in the world.
Also notable is the direct authenticity of the work. It touches on recurrent themes that evoke or explore beauty, alienation and a sense of lack or longing, revealing a world which is subtly foreign to us though seemingly familiar. The exhibition is sited within a domestic environment in a deliberate blurring of boundaries which underlines the subtle complexities of the subjects touched upon."

why?
because it was felt art and culture can help alleviate the problems of the area, part of the city which suffered severly from the heroin crisis of the 80's, which is not over yet.
