The local election results are as terrible for the Conservatives as feared and thanks to Reform they would have been lucky to have had only a 1997-style wipeout, says veteran pollster John Curtice.

Corrib comparisons by Shell

category mayo | environment | opinion/analysis author Sunday August 14, 2005 16:55author by JMauthor address Rossport South, Ballina, Co Mayo Report this post to the editors

Inaccurate comparisons between Corrib and other gas projects.

Otway, Ormen Lange and Snohvit are the best examples of subsea tie-back technology applied to gas processing put forward by Shell.

The only parallel between these developments and Corrib is the absence of an offshore rig, and that processing is done on dry land. That is where the parallel ends.

Otway, in Victoria, Australia, is processed 5km inland, but the upstream pipeline runs under the shoreline to the plant using directional drilling, and then detours around Port Campbell, the nearest inhabited area. In other words, a tunnelled and sensitively routed pipeline, not one dropped in a trench next to houses.

The Ormen Lange field over 100km off the Norwegian coast is processed at a place called Nyhamna; right on the shoreline. The cleaned gas is then piped back out to sea for export to the UK. The high pressure gas never runs near populated areas either before or after processing.

The Snohvit gas field, again off Norway, is brought ashore onto the uninhabitated island of Melkoya, 4km from the mainland. Waste is pumped back out to the well, and liquid natural gas is shipped for export by tanker, without even reaching mainland Norway.

In short, and in spite of what Mark Carrigy and Andy Pyle maintain, the Corrib project remains a unique and unprecedented experiment.

Well done JM. I can't get over the way Plye keeps on about misinformation and it is him that keeps dishing it out.

I checked those sites out. What a load of buineach. Comparisons my *&^"!!

What I still, despite everything, can't believe is the arrogance of Shell/Statoil/Marathon. Their biggest failing is that they keep underestimating the people of Ireland. They keep insulting our intelligence by spewing out half facts and untruths and expecting us to swallow them. The facts of the other projects that Pyle has mentioned have been researched and shown not to be at all comparable to the Corrib Gas Project.

Enough is enough. Where can this circle of lies lead us, the Irish People? The people of Mayo have shown that they can not and will not be bullied by Shells propaganda. The people of Ireland have shown the same by their ever increasing support of the Shell to Sea Project.

Shell processing the gas at sea, so as to put the safety of Irish citizens before their profit is the only option we will accept!

I can hardly credit it! Well done all in Mayo who research what Shell say - pity the political establishment doesn't and hasn't done the same. We wouldn't have 5 men in prison if they had!!

My advice is land the gas in northern ireland where the jobs and investment would be welcome.

Does anyone realise that if the gas was "processed" offshore there will be less jobs

And by the way if you are killed with "untreated" or "treated" gas does it mean you will have a cleaner coffin

There is so much crap upon crap being spoken about this that you all are believing your own lies
