During the Latin American week 2003, and the Latin American film festival there was a documentary called "Murals and Muralists".
which showed some of this work in El Salvador.

It would have been great to have more contact with the latin america solidarity groups based in Dublin!
another time hopefully!


Murals and Muralists(Ireland/2003/30 mins) Salvadoran artist, Gilberto Arriaza helps paint murals with street children in San Salvador on a Trócaire sponsored project. At the invitation of the Derry-El Salvador Project, he arrives in Ireland to work with both the Nationalist and Loyalist community groups in Derry and Belfast including Republican artist, Tom Kelly and Loyalist artist, Marty Edwards. It was captured on film in Derry.

Este intercambio que se ha dado con Irlanda, Colombia y Nicaragua, ha sido muy importante tanto para los educadores como para los jovenes participantes, este proceso dio inicios desde el mes de febrero, y nuestras expectativas para en el mes de julio, era de compartir, analizar, dialogar sobre todo lo relacionado con las metas del milenio, en donde se llenaron estas expectativas, y durante estas tres semanas fueron muy importantes en donde mostramos la unidad, la solidaridad entre los pueblos,.
Con respecto al mural que realizamos, es muy bueno destacar que se baso en las metas del milenio, tomamos al solidaridad, medio ambiento.

Entonces, ¿que es tan importante eso de que algunos jovenes de centro America estan pintando murales en las paredes de Cork?

Nicaragua es un país pequeño en Centro América y creo que es – o fue hasta hace poco – el segundo mas pobre del continente de América.

Como muchos lugares en el mundo, Nicaragua experimento grandes cambios politicos, socials y culturales durnate los últimos decadas. Con una revolución que empezo en el año 1979 las Sandinistas vinieron
cultural change over the last few decades and a revolution sparked in 1979 which led to the Sandinistas overthrowing the old regime through organisation, education and war.

Debido a sus tendencies izquierdistas y marxistas, los EEUU liderado por Ronald Reagon entraron y apoyaron, con una inversion enorme de fondos, el ejercito oponiendo los Sandinistas; las Contras. Al final, después de años de guerra, los Sandinistas perdieron las elecciones y mucho de su poder en el país en el año 1990.

Cuando la revolución empezo, pintando murales fue uno de los principales eventos culturales que pasaba, los murales eran un medio de comunicación de mensajes politicos, organizando comunidades en acciones de grupos y el desarrollo de habilidades.

Muchas artistas vinieron de todos lados del mundo para asistir pintando murales para la revolución. Cuando los Sandinistas perdieron el poder, uno de las primeras cosas que el hizo el nuevo gobierno fue repintar y borrar los murales de la revolución, a la vez de cambiar los textos escolares sobre la historia del país en las escuelas para que no hubo mucho enfoque en la historia recien del país, ni mención de la lucha para una sociedad justa y major para tod@s.

Las Sandinistas todavía estan en poder en la ciudad de Estelí y por eso el pueblo ha seguido y desarrollado su tradición de pintar murales, y se ha ampliado de temsas meramente politicos a los temas universals de igualdad, ola educación, la justicia, el respeto para el medio ambiente, amor para la naturaleza…. El grupo fomentando este trrabajo es FUNARTE y se fundó en el año 1988.

Hace unos años la ONG Irlandes, Trocaire, empezo a trabajar con FUNARTE y aportó con fondos tan necesarios, junto con otros grupos solidarios. FUNARTE trabaja con jovenes, capacitandoles en los principios de muralismo y ddespués trabajando en los barrios marginados de la ciudad, iniciando proyectos con l@s niñas, niños y adolescentes.
Todas y todos estan involucrad@s, todos los seuños e ideas estan tomados en cuenta, las decisions estan tomados de una manera horizontal y consensuada, de lo que veo hasta el momento.

Hace unos aos Trocaire estableció un vínculo con el centro de arte comunitario aqui en Mayfield, una comunidad perifeico del norte de la ciudad de Cork y hace 2 años el primer grupo de Nicaraguenses vino a Cork para un intercambio durante lo cual pintaron el primero de muchos murales que se encuentra en las paredes de Mayfield. Desde este inicio, esta red de arte/ artistas ha crecido y en este año se ha visto un grupo de Colombia involucrado.

¿Entonces de que manera se ha beneficiado a Mayfield?
¿Ha hecho un cambio?

Bueno, los 15 murales estan en las paredes, pero había esperado que hubieran sido un medio a través de lo cual la comunidad se hubiera fortalecido, promoviendo que la comunidad toma control de sus vidas, su lugar. Parece que todavía queda una dependencia que la Alcaldía haga las cosas. El grupo vio un ejemplo de eso anoche cuando estaban montando los paneles de estanciles y graffiti en un cerramiento de Madera – 2 mujeres pasando no quisieron que montaron los paneles porque llamaría atención al lugar y la condición del parque al lado, que no es tan bueno. Hemos estado conversando sobre como las comunidades en diferentes países toman control de sus areas; ¿cómo es que llegan a invertir su tiempo, energía, creatividad y amor en sus areas/ barrios? Forma un gran contraste comparada con las areas que son utilizado mas que todo para votar basura. Se ha empezado una initiativa para establecer un jardin comunitario en el barrio de Glencree, estamos esperando a ver que pasa allí. Es parte del proyecto de los jardines Mandala que se esta desarrollando en todos partes de Cork ahorita. ¿Tal vez una discussion crítica y propuestas para acciones saldran de la exposición de 3 días que va a empezar mañana???

De todos modos, como parte de este proyecto, hemos estado explorando los medios de comunicación y los medios alternatives. Hay una selección de materiales arriba, hemos estado haciendo talleres, pequeños actos para publicar el proyecto en las calles de Cork, hemos estado veyendo películas de ‘indymedia’ y escuchando varios grabaciones. Por todo hemos estado los cuentos de otras personas de todos partes del mundo y hemos estado tratando de contar los nuestros.

Anoche disfrutamos una presentación bilingual de la película buenisima “En el ojo del tormento”, una pelicula corta que muestra muy fuertamente la necesidad que existe para le red y para su desarrollo, y después la pelicula se enfocó en como indymedio ha impactado en Argentina.

Bueno pues, ¡a trabajar! Tenemos mas que hacer en la carnival de la calle…!

So whats the big deal with a few young people from central America painting murals on walls in Cork?

Nicaragua is a small country in central America and I think it is or recently was the second poorest country in the continent of America.
Like many places around the world Nicaragua experienced great political, social and cultural change over the last few decades and a revolution sparked in 1979 which led to the Sandinistas overthrowing the old regime through organisation, education and war.
Due to its strong left wing marxist leanings the US under the leadership of Ronnie Reagan came in and supported, with huge financial spending, the army opposing the Sandinistas; the Contras. Eventually after years of war the Sandinistas lost the elections and lost much power in the country in 1990.

when the revolution began painting murals was one of the main cultural events that would happen, murals were a means of communicating political messages, organising communities in group actions, exploring ideas, developing skills.
Many artists came from around the world to help paint murals for the revolution. When the Sandinistas lost power one of the first things the new governement did was to whitewash over the old murals of the revolution, along with changing the history books and education sylabus so that there was not much talk about the countries recent history or talk of a better and fairer society for all.
the town of Estelli is still under Sandinista control and because of this the community there have continued and developed their tradition of mural painting, it has now developed from purely political themes to universal themes of equality, education, justice, respect for environment, love of nature........the group responsible for this is FUNARTE and they formed back in 1988.

A few years back Irish Aid work NGO group Trocaire got involved with FUNARTE and set up a link with them and along with other groups provided much needed funding. FUNARTE works with young people being educated in the basics of mural painting and then going out into the very poor barrios, neighbourhoods, outside the city and starting projects with the kids there, everyone is invovled, all ideas and dreams are taken onboard, group decision making is normaly done horizontally and by consensus. As far as I can tell so far.

A few years back Trocaire set up a link with the community arts centre here in Mayfield, a community on the northern outskirts of Cork City and 2 years ago the first group of Nicaraguans came to Cork for an exchange program which led to the first of many murals to be painted on the walls of Mayfield. From that this art network has grown and this year it sees a group from Colombia involved.

So how has it benefitted Mayfield?
has it made a difference?
Well, the 15 or so murals hang on the walls but i had hoped that they would have acted as a catalyst for further strengthening of community and more encouragement in the community to take control of their lives, their place. There still seems to be a dependance from the city council to do things, an example of this was experienced by the group last night when they tried to put up the stencil and grafitti panel boards on a blank hoarding, 2 women came along and objected to the art work being put up because it would bring attention to the area and the park or grass land beside it that is not in the best of conditions. We have been having conversations about how communites in other countries take control and ownership of their areas; whereby they do invest their time, energy, creativity, love into their area. A big contrast from areas that are mostly used as rubbish dumps. A community garden initiave has stared down in the Glencree area, we await further developments there. that is part of the Mandala gardens project running throughout Cork at present. Perhaps more critical discussion and action will come from the 3 day exhibition which starts tomorow??

anyway, as part of this project we have been exploring media and alternative media. there is a wide selection of alternative media material upstairs, we have been doing workshops, we have been doing little carnival publicity actions in the streets of cork, we have been watching indymedia films and listening to various audio. all in all we have been listening to others' stories from the world and we have been trying to tell our own

last night we had an enjoyable bi-lingual evening where we watched the top film "in the eye of the storm", a short film which shows very graphically the need for and the development of the indymedia network, it then focused on how indymedia made an impact in argentina.

anyway, better head, we have more street carnival to do

Dreams from Cork city to go to Monks Garden in Venice.

Mayfield community arts project, along with Muralismo friends from Nicaragua and Colombia will create an art event in a central Cork public space from where they will send a giant postcard to the Venice Bienelle ("the art olympics").

Art Encounter 2005 is an artistic exchange which sees young artists from Cork, Nicaragua and Columbia living and working together in Cork for the month of July.The fruits of their labour will be on exhibit at the end of the month at a public art exhibition in Mayfield and members of the public are invited to attend.

Mayfield Community Arts Centre have organised a free open top bus to run from Emmet Place in the city centre to St. Dominic's Meditation Centre, Colmcille Avenue, Mayfield from Thursday, July 21 to Saturday, July 23.

Funded by Leargas, Trocaire, DCI, Cork City Council and Cork 2005, the purpose Art Encounter 2005 is to encourage young people to explore issues of equality, while sharing cultural experiences and working together on a public art project.

Everything from photography to video projections to sculptures will be on exhibit and the open top bus will run every 90 minutes from Emmet Place. You will also have a chance to meet and talk with this group of young international artists at this time.

The Nicaraguan group, Funarte work mainly with mural and the Columbian group Centro Colombo Americano specialises in visual arts, cinema and performance arts. Both groups currently have six young artists participating in the exchange in Cork.

An art event will happen in Emmet Place during the three days, whereby the young artists will demonstrate their skills by creating a giant postcard using stencil and mural techniques developed over the previous weeks. The reverse side of the postcard will then become the canvas for the people of Cork to share their dreams with the world. The postcard will then be sent out to the "Monks Garden" in Venice which is the venue for artist Sarah Pierce's contribution to the Irish Republics participation in this years Bienelle, the postcard will hang in the garden untill October.

We are hoping for maximum publicity for this special event and this afternoon, tuesday 19th, will see the beginnings of the publicity carnival through the streets of Cork. Watch out for colour, music and dancing.

Mayfield Community Arts Centre (Centro de Arte en el barrio de Mayfield, Cork) alberga un programa de intercambio de tres semanas entre jovenes artistas de Nicaragua, Colombia y Cork. Durante estas tres semanas de intercambio, los jovenes artistas viviran juntos y trabajaran en diferentes proyectos de arte de caracter publico, incluido un mural gigante, una escultura hecha de rama de sauce, fotografia y proyecciones de video.
El proyecto culminará en un evento publico que durará tres dias en Emmet Place (Plaza donde se encuentra ubicada la Opera de Cork).Desde alli un divertido autobus de techo descubierto traerá al publico al Centro de Arte de Mayfiel (St Domonic's Meditation Centre, ColmCille Avenue, Myfield, Cork) para que puedan disfrutar del resto de la exhibicion y contemplar más de cerca la esencia de este interesantisimo proyecto.

Art Encounter 2005 is an artistic exchange which sees young artists from Cork, Nicaragua and Columbia living and working together in Cork for the month of July.The fruits of their labour will be on exhibit at the end of the month at a public art exhibition in Mayfield and members of the public are invited to attend.

Mayfield Community Arts Centre have organised a free open top bus to run from Emmet Place in the city centre to St. Dominic's Meditation Centre, Colmcille Avenue, Mayfield from Thursday, July 21 to Saturday, July 23.

Funded by Leargas, Trocaire, DCI, Cork City Council and Cork 2005, the purpose Art Encounter 2005 is to encourage young people to explore issues of equality, while sharing cultural experiences and working together on a public art project.

The exhibition at the end of the month will be the culmination of a major creative effort from the young local and international artists and their organisations located on either side of the Atlantic.

The exchange aims to make the arts more accessible to the public in general, an aim typical of this year’s Capital of Culture programme. The varied work of the young artists explores the dreams of young people all-over the world and the Millennium Development Goals, which are very topical on an international scale of late.

Everything from photography to video projections to sculptures will be on exhibit and the open top bus will run every 90 minutes from Emmet Place. You will also have a chance to meet and talk with this group of young international artists at this time.

The Nicaraguan group, Funarte work mainly with mural and the Columbian group Centro Colombo Americano specialises in visual arts, cinema and performance arts. Both groups currently have six young artists participating in the exchange in Cork.

This exhibition will provide a unique insight in to the issues affecting young people today in a local setting. Take the bus from Emmet Place to Mayfield. After all, Cork is the Capital of Culture and the ride is free.

Good stuff Dunk - good to see you back in action on indymedia. Sounds like a great initiative, and good timing - at least the visitors had some nice weather for their muralismo.

For info on more Ireland-Latin America links, there is the Latin America Solidarity Centre. They give courses on Latin American cultural issues, among other things. It seems that there is a strong understanding in Latin America of the link between culture and politics. For example, there is a strong tradition of music as social commentary throughout the continent.
