Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4"The prosperity brought by the Celtic tiger has caused phenomenal house price rises in Dublin, leading thousands of families to move out of the city to fast-expanding towns such as Navan, Kells and Dunshaughlin. The Republic of Ireland has been furiously building and upgrading roads to get this new generation of commuters in and out of Dublin every day. Now they want to build a motorway, the M3, close to the hill of Tara.
Over the past year fierce arguments have raged over whether ancient heritage or transport infrastructure should take precedence. Most local commuters are enthusiastic about the road, but the heritage people are horrified. Ancient and modern perspectives have been pitted against each other in a battle which says much about Irish values, posing the question of whether a nation can undergo extensive modernisation without shedding its irreplaceable past."
I think it's great that Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron decided to speak out and support the saving of Tara Skryne. I find it disgusting that they are criticized for it. As for Mr. Townsend catching the bus in Navan, I guess we will never know because that's his business. How anyone can criticize him for good works is beyond me. There are many here in the U.S. and across the world who are watching how Tara is dealt with, and believe me, we more than appreciate Stuart Townsend using his star power to bring light to the incredible greed that has caused this rift in moral values that will affect what is one of the true hearts of Ireland.
The comments made against theron and Townsend are justified because they are speaking about a situation which they have no part in and will probable never feel the effects of. The people that decide should be the ones that are directly effected. Not by an actor who is from Howth in Dublin and has spent the last decade in America. If he loves the Hill so much why hasnt he gone there?
Response to Al: I thinks it's presumptious to make a judgement as to whether the destruction of Tara will affect someone. I too think the people who are affected should decide, provided that it's done with the heart. I think that no matter where you live, you have a responsibility to remember and protect the place you call home. We all carry home in our hearts, and if you look at what is at stake, truly , you and others would see that what Tara represents is much, much more than a meaningless road that can be placed anywhere else. We know that the road can be put anywhere else!
Just because Mr. Townsend has lived in America doesn't mean he's given up his right to speak and defend any part of his heritage, and it's no one's business whether he spends his time on the Hill or in Bangladesh. Obviously the man has spent some time there otherwise he would not defend it. I don't know where you live, but I would never try to take away your right to speak out and protect your homeland, no matter what, because that would be wrong.
This all comes down to right and wrong and my point was simply that Mr. Townsend should be commended because he did the right thing to speak out against this destruction. So many celebrities these days speak out about things and other bull which they know nothing about and I think many find it refreshing that Stuart Townsend defended something that he knows and loves.
Furthermore, I guess one would say that I too have no right to speak about Tara since I live in the U.S.. Well, if you take that attitude, you simply cop out of the real issue. Tara is sacred and why anyone would want to bury it makes absolutely no logical sense. For those who do, they obviously have other reasons (like greed, or they just don't care about things sacred). I appreciate everyone who has supported Tara in the past and who still does.
