Political Conjugations Sat Dec 20, 2025 07:00 | James Alexander
Everyone assumes that words have straightforward meanings. Philosophers because they want them to and politicians because they need them to. But the first law of politics is that words are ambiguous, says James Alexander.

O Leary is what we need for the Taoiseach.high time that somone gets out there and shatters the trade unions and the leftist waster powerbase that has held Ireland back for so long.
come back Maggie Thatcher. We have a job for you in Ireland
the reason why air rianta is being broken up is because the government want to satisfy their friends in big business. They have little consideration for the social and economic knock on effects it could have. for example a profit driven private company is not going going to continue giving 10 million in subsities to shannon airport as it would be considered "wasteful" this could spell disaster for industry in the area which is so dependant on the airport, thousands of jobs could be at stake.
Mary harney has to be the most arrogant tanaiste we have ever had she is threatening to walk out of government(which would be a good thing for everyone btw) if minister brennan refuses to privatise dublin bus. She says running it is a "burden" on the tax payer`s money, what does she expect? if we want to provide a good decent reliable bus service to everyone in dublin there is no way a profit can be made. dublin bus are dependant on state subsidies but thats a price worth paying for proper transport. A private company would hike fairs and cut non profitable routes leaving thousands without a bus service.
what sickens me most is that the government is using the lisbon strategy in order to push for the privitisation of all public services, yet they are not using the parts of the treaty which call for better wages and equality for the disabled. Profit before people epitomizes 7 years of Fianna Fail/PD administration. If they are short of money to run public services they should cancel the massive tax concessions given to rasehorse owners.
The only confronting the Sinners will do will be after dark with a couple of balaclavas and baseball bats.
And there is no way they'll go near O' Leary.
So now feck off Sinners, another example of crap opposition.
What sad bastard you are Jeff! is that the level of political debate your up to? Why don't you apply for a job as a columnist in the Sindo. By the way what are you trying to imply by saying the Shinners would never go near O'Leary? Is there some political point in this cryptic comment? I'm intrigued. Make sure to fill us all in you pathetic windbag!
What's your real point Jeff? Are you just a Shinner basher or do you have some better political alternative in mind?
of taxpayer monies.
Aer Rianta.
Govt subsised incompetant,[especially the rent a cop section who couldnt even deal with the crusties]heavily unionised, jobs for life attitude.GET RID OF IT
Ditto Dublin bus,CIE in all its new guises,
ESB,Aer Lingus. In fact ALL the semi state bodies. One of the reason the services in this country are shite,is because everyone who works in them knows they can be lazy, and total wasters and be almost impossible to fire.If they are threatened on being somwhat productive they can run off to their collective mummy to bawl.In a proper run ecnomy you would keep your job by being productive, not by inefficency. But efficency and the Irish dont fit in the same sentence.
trade unions are the best thing to ever happen to ireland. Prior to the connolly/larkin era workers worked insane hours and recieved meagre wages whilst the bosses took most of the wealth.Mary harney thinks that companies can be trusted to voluntarily respect the rights and needs of workers.PDs are just a subservient branch of IBEC
The best way to take on the bosses is where it hurts - in the workplace by organising a union. It's your constitutional right and new laws protect workers from victimisation. Get in touch if you want to know more.
If this i the case why dont SIPTU support the right of Dublin Bus workers to join the union of their choice?
What is actually happening is SIPTU and NBRU are activly helping Dublin Bus to stop people joining the IWU.
Could it be because SIPTU are more interested in keeping a closed shop for themselves and NBRU than they are in workers rights?
I have to laugh at this one:
"If Ireland is to move ahead in the 21st Century as a modern European state with respect for workers’ rights and clear blue water between political parties and big business, the likes of O’Leary should be faced down."
Looks like these Sinn Fein boyos have been doing a bit too much insular navel-gazing recently ....
Show me which modern "21st century" European State has "clear blue water between political parties and big business".
I can't think of a single one .... at least not among the "core" European states, i.e. the big ones like France and Germany ....
And looking at recent developments across Europe, "respect for worker's rights" is being steadily eroded .....
O'Leary is not some kind of unique Irish phenomenon .... he's just an Irish symptom of a much more widespread disease .......
Unfortunately it's cowboys like this who are steering the ship these days and I would hazard a guess that we'll be waiting some time before they are "faced down" by the Shinners or anyone else ...... especially since O Leary's corporate headquarters is probably in London anyway ......
