A million baby seals to be killed
Dublin's Green MEP joins protests at Canadian Embassy.

http://www.pmckenna.com/media/statements/2004/04.05.12.html

. . . . .

Canada is dismissive of the international opposition it faces to this hideously cruel practice and shows contempt for world opinion on the issue. The Canadian Government is now promoting one of the cruellest hunts in history. It is using the seals as 'scapegoats' for its own mistakes having overseen the depletion of North Atlantic fish stocks by over fishing.

http://Boycott-Canada.com

. . . . .

Respect for Animals is a non-governmental organisation dedicated solely to campaigning against the cruel and unnecessary international fur trade.

Respect for Animals (and Lynx before it) believes that it is morally wrong to kill an animal for the fur on its back and by using peaceful consumer campaigns has virtually destroyed the fur trade in the UK. But worldwide an animal dies every second for 'fashion'.

author by Mikepublication date Thu May 13, 2004 14:25author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It's a seal pup. That's more or less what they look like when they are born, much bigger, of course, but just as white and fluffy looking. It's that wonderful soft, warm, (and because white) dyeable fur that they are getting killed. And also because the fishing grounds have become so depleted by overfishing that the fishermen want fewer seal.

Of course can't expect you folks to recognize seals since you drove yours to extinction long ago.

BTW -- there's only ONE Canadian province involved in the seal hunting -- Newfoundland. Folks should keep in mind that Canada is a federation with relatively strong provincial governments (local control) and the "Newfies" didn't even become part of the Canadian federation till the 20th century (sorry, as a Yank I'm not that much up on the history of our neighbors to the North to be able to give you a more exact date).

As for maple syrup -- it's produced in the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick, maybe some in Nova Scotia and Ontario. But sugar maples don't grow in Newfoundland/Labrador -- hell, there are bloody few trees there of any kind. But go ahead and boyoctt Canadian maple syrup if you like. We make the good stufff down here in Vermont, Maine, New York, and my own Massachusetts (but the Vermonters claim THEIRS is the best).

What makes you think seals are extinct in Ireland? That's bollocks!! I live on the south-east coast and I see about 10 a day during the summer.

The seals we have here aren't fuzzy and cute though, they look like flabby earless dogs with rotten leather for skin, and they don't have too large an appetite either. Hence, no killing.

author by sub commandant paranoiapublication date Thu May 13, 2004 16:48author address author phone Report this post to the editors

they're seal cubs, no problems there. They grow up into Seals. no complex metamorphosis with those things.
But the cuddlier Canadian things are the Larvae stage of a very dangerous creature.

As soon as we secure independence for Quebec we can publish all the secret files, and then the quislings of Earth defence greenies will look well silly.

Would you protest if it looked like a Geiger illustration? Quit.e not at all. That's what's so sinister about these things, they've got us completely sussed.
Look cute, big eyes, look cuddly.
then come August-
the armour plated insect body breaks out of the fur and the wings unfold and they're hungry .... for blood.

author by £publication date Thu May 13, 2004 16:52author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Chemical analysis studies in Quebec have shown that most of the maple syrup marketed is actually beat juice (a species of sweet beat with nearly identical taste and colour). It shouldn't matter, except that "maple syrup" is like ten times over-priced...

It is a good time to point out that like millions (I have not seen actual figures worldwide) of fucking animals have been slaughtered in recent years under that heading of mad cow and the sars chicken thing. Much of this killing is a result of farmers livelihoods threatened by the free market who are forced to cull entire herd simply to maintain market prices and not because of the perceived threat of some infected livestock.

Sorry to seem willy nillie, but if animals equaled humans, if true this would be a capitalist holocaust.

And to tie it to today's torture stories, the practice of vivisection contributes to the refinement of torture techniques.

We suck.

How many countries is that we have to boycott now? USA, Canada, obviously. I guess Spain because of its bull fights, Norway and Japan because of their whaling.
The UK, Italy and Poland because of Iraq. Australia definitely, both because of Iraq and the treatment of Aborigines. Could someone make up a complete list and post it here, as its getting too difficult to keep track of. Not sure if Ireland is on the list or not, as it does allow fox hunting and hare coursing.

author by Cabhogpublication date Thu May 13, 2004 21:50author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The green party have supported boycotts against Iceland and Canada over whaling and seal culls respectively.

They however have not called for a boycott of say Saudi Arabian oil, which is funding Al Queda terrorism on one front, and the corrupt and tryannical house of Saud on the other.

I presume in green party logic, the life of the seal cub is much more important than freedom from torture and the secret police.

Perspective people!

It reminds me of the Clark diaries, no problem selling weapons to the Iraqi (they're just arabs, but killing animials for fur, hideous)

The arsehole Green Party of Canada SUPPORTS the seal hunt. Go figure. So much for a "global" green movement.

P.P.S. The point behind all this vitriol, is that there is enough injustice generally, and cruelty to animals specifically, in Ireland, I know, I used to live there. The seal hunt, while I oppose it, is less cruel than factory farming. There are more worthwhile fights, closer to home, and all of the fanfare of attacking poor fishermen halfway around the world distracts attention to the larger issue that exists EVERYWHERE -- the billions and billions of animals enslaved, slaughtered and casually consumed daily.

I would say Boycott America with those poor intelligent
chickens being slaughtered. I would also say boycott America because they eat cows and pigs which fall into the same category as placental mammals just like the seals.

I like the the taste of seal every now and then, but what
about the seals who eat fish? Chickens aren't mammals and neither are fish. Do fish have feelings

...or is the Seal trade the only thing Canada gets Jingoistic about?

Quote: 'Just yesterday (25 January), Belgium became the first EU country to ban trade in seal pelts – the ban is to come into force in three weeks, much to Canada's disappointment.

Last year, Canadian fisheries minister Loyola Hearn told Belgian politicians to think about Canadian soldiers who died in Europe during the first world war before slamming the door shut on Canadian seal products, according to the Associated Press.'
