* SPYWARE - is a program (software) which monitors and collects information about a person’s computer usage. The spyware then uses the computers own Internet connection to send (without the users knowledge or permission) the information on to a 3rd party.

What would you think if someone was monitoring every web page you visit, every form you fill in, every e-mail you send?

How do you get infected with Spy ware?
Most usually from downloading freeware or another program off the Internet, I got mine from downloading a game OSAMA.EXE (about Bin Laden!)
Spyware hides in your system files collecting information and sending it to interested parties, it is impossible to spot until your FIREWALL (more on these later) detects an unregistered program trying to access the Internet without your permission.
Go to www.lavasoft.com and download a program called Ad-Aware to clean your system of spy ware.

Who uses Spy ware?
Mostly used by large Corporations and data collecting services (stealth advertising) but can be used by anyone who wants to spy on you.

Is it illegal?
No, funny that wonder why?

*VIRUSES - There are some nasty Viruses doing the rounds at the moment (see SWP posting), which include boot viruses a very nasty data destroying bug. Remember to back up your work and have an up to date! Virus checker.

A computer virus is a piece of malicious code that attaches to important areas within computers, such as executable files, and the boot areas of floppy disks and hard disks. A virus can destroy data after copying itself to other host files or disks. The virus spreads when its host file runs and the malicious code is unleashed. The virus can quickly spread into memory as the computer boots from an infected disk.
Once in memory, the virus can infect other executable files or disk boot sectors. Typically, a virus remains dormant until some trigger event occurs, such as a system date. In addition to replication, a computer virus often performs some other function, usually intended to do damage or spread a message.

There are more than 20,000 known viruses.
Though much of what people have heard about viruses is hype, viruses are actually quite common and easily spread. If left unguarded, your PC could lose data or become corrupt.
The primary threat of infection comes from files that are shared, and then opened and used.

INDYMEDIA HACKED!!!! - Annoying but non fatal - some looser with to much time on there hands wrote a program that spammed indymedia newswire with crazy pro McDonalds Spam.

FIREWALLS prevent Internet cookies from giving away information about you and keeps people from tracking your PC and Internet use.

FIREWALLS give you the IP address of who is HACKING YOU put these in to a tracer software and see who is HACKING YOU

Last night while on INDYMEDIA IRELAND, MADRIA and BARSALONA I got 2 HACKS !!!!!!!!!!!! (Detected on my new FIREWALL)

when I traced them on my new toy VisualRoute guess whom I found?
(VisualRoute is a visual, fast, and integrated ping, whois, and traceroute program that automatically analyses connectivity problems, displaying the results on a World map. i.e. it finds out whose hacking you and shows you where they are in the world.
