Cork Incinerator decision shows contempt for people

category cork | environment | press release author Friday January 16, 2004 15:45author by Cork WP Report this post to the editors

Indaver Ireland get green light for massive toxic burner

The Workers' Party has said the decision of An Bord Pleanala to give the go-ahead for the proposed hazardous waste incinerator at ringaskiddy showed contempt for the concerns of local people.

INCINERATOR DECISION SHOWS CONTEMPT FOR PEOPLE

The Workers’ Party has said the decision of An Bord Pleanála to give the go-ahead for the proposed hazardous waste incinerator at ringaskiddy, in spite of the objections of the board’s Senior Planning Officer, showed contempt for the concerns of people in the Lower Harbour area and throughout Cork.

Cork Workers’ Party spokesman Ted Tynan said the decision was disgraceful and showed that the government firmly pulls the strings of Bord Pleanala and is determined to build the incinerator regardless of public concern or the views of the board’s own officials.

“The hand of Minister Martin Cullen is firmly imprinted on this decision. The government has decided to ride roughshod over the genuine health fears of people in the area and the safeguards the state itself has put in place. Despite the spotlight on Planning in the various Tribunals investigating corruption, it is obvious that the Planning Process has been seriously compromised”.

“With this decision from Bord Pleanála, coupled with the recent revelations of Minister Cullen over-ruling officials on other planning issues and the cutting off of state funding to An Taisce, people can have no faith in any government agency in the area of planning and environment. Therefore there can also be no trust that such agencies can be relied to protect the health and safety of people once this toxic facility is built”, said Ted Tynan.

OK, So now what do we do?

Notice how the proposed incinerator in Meath last year, was quickly stopped, in a few weeks, despite having less vocal and long running oppostion than in south Cork, hmm wonder why?

Could it perhaps be that it was close to MCreevy's constituency, and more importantly was right in the middle of billionare stud farm country? So the conclusion must be that the health (financial and otherwise) of these horses is more important than that of the people of Cork!

Quelle surprise, this type of policy is after all coming from ex PD now FF minister Cullen, maybe FFs palms have been greased with money from the incinerator lobby?
I also heard on the radio 1 at 1 today that the proposed incinerator will have a spare unused capacity of 85,000 tonnes while this country produces only 15,000 tonnes of toxic waste, and it's not supposed to import any, yeah right.

Hopefully the appeal will stop the incinerator plans, but if not we could have a Cork Churchilian new year... I can see it now "We will fight them on the beaches (harbour) etc"!With this and the no show of the cork school of music, roll on the declaring of the peoples
republic of cork!

Try moving beyond the whole NIMBY thing and just accept the fact of modern/late capitalist living. Reduce the risk of pollution and accidents etc. from the facility and get over this utopian-informed whinning.
