Paisley addresses Ahearn in EU Parliament

category national | eu | news report author Wednesday January 14, 2004 11:57author by sly - lp Report this post to the editors

Following Bertie Ahearn addresse to the European Parliament this morning, a number of Irish MEPs sopke to the house.

Ian Paisley MEP made the most outspoken remark. He said he welcomed the Irish Presidency for one reason only, that it would mean the 'Dublin government' spending less time in the affairs of Northern Ireland due its heavy workload over the next 6 months. He also made a comment about human rights in the EU, mentioning only one incident, the rights of individuals who have been abused by Catholic priests. He particularitly highlighted the Irish Republic and the role of the Taosieach in defending the Church.

Avril Doyle speaking later condemned his remarks, with applause from the chamber. She also made reference to the Taosieachs claim that Ireland is closer to Boston than Berlin, from which she distanced herself, and called on the Irish government to address the reduction in spending in Irish Universities.

Also addressing the Taosieach Proinias de Rossa, highlighted the need for the Irish Presidency to push through EU legislation on temporary/agency workers, which is currently being stalled. He followed up by calling on the government to focus on poverty reduction in the third world, inparticular debt reduction. The plight of the Palestinians and the situation of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners were also raised by de Rossa.

was the Italian Silvio Burlosconi.
I am not sure if the news has broken in Ireland yet, but the Italian Supreme Court has overturned the immunity bill passed by Burlosconi last year as being unconstitutional.

Burlosconi is now to face charges again.
on corruption and corruption and corruption, with a good dollop of murder and theft thrown into the accomplices.

Also his attempt to control all TV has now been stopped as well.

Burlosconi has survived many times before, but we might be forgiven this time in thinking the "tide is finally turning".
= AUGURI!
(more details later...)

God (hopefully) will shut him up pretty soon.

Strange remark from Bertie on the Boston v. Berlin thing considering he was speaking to the EU parliament whilst Ireland held its presidency.

Hopefully the next time Paisley gets in a rant he will keel over and his dinosaur heart will fail.
but, even though he's a sectarian bigoted wanker, i must admit he has given irish nationalists great entertainment over the years, with quotes such as
"i'm not prejudice against Catholics, I just don't like them"

What a comic! The poor old soul gets funnier and funnier, the less power he has. He should get his own stand-up programme on TV: "The No Show!". Give the man an award - he's hilarious!

Well you young Papist I'd hate to make you down cast but you had best remember that I am the leader of the LARGEST unionist party in Northern Ireland.
The loyal people of Ulster will never yield to the Communist Papist Satanic conspiracy of Sinn Fein / IRA.
It is quite clear that the MAJORITY of people in Northern Ireland vote for political parties who are democratic and loyal to Her Majesty Elizabeth II the Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and do not have pirvate armies.
That will remain that way as long as I have breath in my body and as long as God Almighty sustains me!
