The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

This story originated with Willy O'Dea making the allegation in an interview on the BBC - your link to the BBC appears, like the story, to be bogus.

British police said they have no knowledge of any such situation and that if Willy has any proof they would be very interested in seeing it. Aren't we all Willy. However it may be a case that Willy has taken a course at the Bush/Blair school of "proof" where he has developed the means to "know" things the rest of us mere mortals don't!

Willy O'Dea has been unavailable for comment.

Willie O'dea made the allegation and spoke on BBC4 - you can download him from the BBC Radio 4 website.

methinks willie was a tad confused

guns are being trafficked but theyre going from uk to ireland

as for ciras links with drugdealers these are well documented, e.g. cantillon/woodland and the ak47 escapade
this seems to be a specific cira problem, pira/rira staying out of the drug scene

the main entry port for cocaine and cocaine base to Europe. The knock on effect will take about three weeks, users will see a drop in quality and rise in price, and more worryingly the crack cocaine market will also be effected as base supply will be closed, this will cause an increase in anti-social crime.

¿are we ready for a drugs debate?

Really now! the cops have charged limerick RSF members on CIRA membership charges on the flimsiest of evidence in a show trial that collapsed earlir this year.

If the cops had even the most circumstantial evidence, they would proceed with charges against republicans on drug charges, knowing that it would take a year to get to the Special Criminal Court. However, as they have no evidence at all, any case would be thrown out at the start by the District Court.

The constant libelling of RSF and CIRA makes me wonder what limerick ladys (sic) real agenda is.

limerick lady is very likely a cop who is frustrated at being unable to frame Limerick Republicans.

There is no link between the CIRA and drug dealers in Limerick. Its no coincidence that these stories are appearing around the same time RSF are launching their 2004 election campaign in the city. Expect more shite like this to appear in the run up to polling day. The branch are telling so many lies that they are forgetting what they are saying. First the CIRA is finished and has no guns. Then it was importing guns into limerick from England and now its exporting them from Limerick to England. Pity the police in England arent as easy to turn as people like Paul Williams isnt it Mr branchman?

By Indymedia. But I will post this AGAIN.
I think old "looney Tunes" O Dea has got it wrong.
It is more like what is happening is there is plenty of guns and drugs coming from "gunchester"[what manchester is known as,due to its plentiful supply of illegal firearms].
What is more likely is that guns used in a crime in Manchester are exported to Limerick ,where they are clean to be used ,and guns used in Limerick are exported to Manchester .Yes there is some subversive connection as you would need the contacts to shift that stuff. As well as that it is intresting to know that a mercury tilt switch car bomb was made and attempted to be used last year in limerick. It fell off in a residential neighbourhood.Four months ago one group of the feud was arrested with the same type of bomb.Guess the outbreak of peace has made CIRA/RIRA become mecenaries.Got to make a living somhow!

Same with the loyalist groups. They're just criminal gangs masquerading as freedom fighters.

They're sick lying drug dealing scum, UDA,IRA. CIRA and all the rest of them. We're sick of you scum.

There is absolutely no evidence of Óglaigh na hÉireann (CIRA) being involved in drug-dealing or trading drugs for weapons. However the Branch in Limerick have a vivid imagination. Even the British police in Manchester have denied the allegations - now that must tell you something.

Any change in a change of tactics? That job in Omagh din't go down to will with many of the Irish people you think you're trying to liberate.

Fucking scum, if you're going to do another one, at least do it right.

True Republican, there is only one organization known as Oglaigh na hEireann in this country and it is not those fuckin traitors of Ireland the IRA,CIRA,PIRA. Oglaigh na hEireann refers to the Irish Defence Forces and i cant stand someone tarnishing the name of the men and women of the DF by associating them with terrorism
