Anti-War demo at Fianna Fail Ard Fheis in Killarney on 11 October

category national | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Thursday October 02, 2003 21:09author by Fintan Lane - Irish Anti-War Movementauthor phone 087 1258325 Report this post to the editors

At last Sunday's Irish Anti-War Movement AGM, a decision was taken to support a demonstration called by the Tralee Anti-War Group to be held at the forthcoming Ard Fheis of Fianna Fail. This annual jamboree of the corrupt and the corruptible is due to be held on Saturday week in Killarney. It is vital that people make a serious effort to get to this demonstration, which will be focused on the abuse of Shannon airport as a U.S. military refuelling stop.

11 October - Anti-war demonstration at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis in Killarney

Demands:
US Military out of Shannon
No Irish troops for the occupation of Iraq
Drop all charges of civil disobedience

This is a chance to bring it home to FF party members that we hold Bertie Ahern, Brian Cowan and the government accountable for the Irish participation in the US war effort in Iraq.

We reject the escalation proposed by Ahern that Irish troops are sent to reinforce the brutal US/UK occupation of Iraq.

We demand instead that the Irish government drops all charges against those activists who committed acts of civil disobedience and/or non-violently disarmed a US warplane at Shannon.

I'm going to try to make it to this demo but i definitely won't be following John Cunninghams advice! Is he for real? Blame the PDs and let FF off the hook? Huh??

The protest is a good idea, but it might be worth bearing in mind that some of the delegates may agree with the protestors.

Here in Galway, I know that several 'ordinary' Fianna Fail members have participated in anti-war activity. This has not stopped us from picketing Minister O Cuiv and highlighting his hypocrisy on the war, but in doing so we have been careful to draw attention to traditional FF policy on neutrality.

There may be 10 or there may be 100s of anti-war FFers in Killarney, and the anti-war movement should be careful not to alienate them. Rather, appeal to them to assert party policy & to resist the sell-out perpetrated by Cowen, Ahern & Co. (It might be a good idea to blame the warmongering PDs for it all)

At least McDowell has come out against the government over the payment issue to sexual abuse victims. Could lead to internal governmental tension, which is at least something.

Hope the protest in Killarney is a success.
