Lawyer to Sue Jews for Biblical 'Plunder'

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian lawyer said Wednesday he was planning to sue the world's Jews for "plundering" gold during the Exodus from Pharaonic Egypt thousands of years ago, based on information in the Bible.



Nabil Hilmi, dean of the law faculty at Egypt's al-Zaqaziq University, said the legal basis for the case was under study by a group of lawyers in Egypt and Europe.


"This is serious, and should not be misread as being political against any race. We are just investigating if a debt is owed," Hilmi told Reuters in a telephone interview.


The relevant passage from the Bible, Exodus 12 verses 35 to 36 reads: "The Israelites had done as Moses told them; they had asked the Egyptians for jewelry of silver and gold, and for clothing. ... And so they plundered the Egyptians." This translation is in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.


Some Jewish commentators say that while the Biblical passage may be fact, the Hebrews were enslaved by the Egyptians and therefore had a right to claim compensation for wages.


"Hilmi's assertion that the Hebrew Bible is fact has given Israel and Jews the world over a reason to rejoice. He has opened the door for all Jews to sue Egypt for over 400 years of slavery," writer Beth Goodman told Reuters.


Tareq Zaghoul, a lawyer at the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights in Cairo, said it would be difficult to prove historical fact in the passage that would stand up in court.


"This needs historical documents and evidence to back it up. It is rather far-fetched," he said.


Hilmi said Egyptian and European historical and religious experts were trying to establish if the biblical passage could be taken as fact, and hence form the basis for a lawsuit.


He said the argument that Jews could sue Egypt for enslaving them was also being studied by experts.


Hilmi gave no details of which court he planned to file the case in or whether he thought such a case would be exempt from the sort of statute of limitations that in many countries rules out legal cases after a certain period of time.


He also declined to put a value on the goods "plundered."

We have filed this letter away with your surname and a good description of one of the editorial team (is it a woman really?). On first reading we wonder would such a case act to question the legality of the modern state of Egypt's custody of one of the World's heritage sites (the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphynx). We have accordingly faxed (off the transaparent record Mr Hoagland to start a global campaign to buy the Pyramids dig them up and see how they _really_ work).

It never ceases to amaze me the lengths lawyers will go to for the purpose of parting anyone else from their money. However we must not get too frivilous about the various groups who might be entitled to sue one another.
Obviously things that happened a few thousand years ago are patently ridiculous, and not in the same bracket as things within living memory, but there are some people who might try to associate the two in an effort to denigrate and undermine the more modern cases.

Canada's medical marijuana leaves bad taste

Some medical marijuana users in Canada say the drug being supplied by the government is disgusting.

The country's Ministry of Health began distributing the drug to a handful of patients with serious illnesses last month to comply with a court ruling.

Canada has allowed the use of medical marijuana for more than two years, but until the court order the government refused to provide the drug to approved users.

But now a patients' rights group says the first users of the official marijuana find it weak and nauseating.

Court ruling

Two years ago Canada became the first country to regulate medicinal cannabis, but there was a lack of official supply of the drug and some patients complained they still had to buy it from street dealers.


The Health Ministry's official supply is being grown underground in an abandoned mine in Canada's remote north.
Health Minister Anne McLellan says she does not want it distributed to patients, at least not yet.

But this July a court ruled the government had to sell the drug to patients, so that is now happening.

Unfortunately many patients say the government's marijuana is terrible, with one saying it made him physically ill, another reporting it to be so weak and unpleasant he is returning it to the government with hopes of getting his money back.

One medicinal marijuana lobby group also says test results show the official supply has little active ingredient and is contaminated with lead and arsenic.

The health minister says she is willing to have her officials meet with patients to discuss the problems.

But patients say the government really needs to rethink its marijuana strategy, which they say is costing millions of taxpayers' dollars and is producing a drug that is worse than most street product.

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Ken Kesey.


Today's reporting of the death of the albino Gorila of Barcelona nestles in the Spanish papers amongst other news:
Six people aged 21-26 were detained yesterday by the Guardia Civil under anti-terrorism legislation.
The group are described by the Guardia Civil as being a _radical_ and _insurrectionist_ anarchist group with links to similar Italian groups.
They are accused of continuing an "urban terror" campaign which has included letter bombs to embassies and editorial offices of newspapers, firebombing banks and generally being most unpleasant.
Amongst the items seized were a pistol, a revolver, a belt of ammunition 12 mm, equipment for the manufacture of explosives, a bottle of gasoline, two manuals on the manufacture of explosives, wigs, sunglasses, a book dated 1921 on the manufacture of fireworks, and the infamous so called "anarchist's handbook".

The Guardia Civil report that they uncovered this "anti-system" cell after monitoring visits to others arrested under the FIES programme in the last year. Though not stated, it is thought that the Italian links being reffered to are the support group of convicted bank robber and murdered Lavazza.
The Guardia Civil alledge that the group arrested yesterday originally were assembled in Tarragona from whence they moved to BCN to carry out a campaign of "urban terror".

At a Veterans Administration hospital in Menlo Park, California, Kesey was paid volunteer experimental subject, taking mind-altering drugs & reporting their effects. His experiences as an aide at a psychiatric hospital & LSD sessions served as background for One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest, which was set in a mental hospital. The book reveals the dehumanising effects of the social conformity of the 1950s, & gained huge critical & commercial success.
Kesey formed the 'Merrie Pranksters', bought an old school bus, & toured America & Mexico with his friends. Their weird exploits were later chronicled in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1973).

Dear Sir,
I'm all in favour of opening the doors of the parochial houses to the community especially the young, and as such would like to draw your readers' attention to one of my little hobbies.
I collect WW2 amunition and NAZI memorabilia and as such couldn't help notice that those radical and obviously misguided youngsters over in BCN had a belt of WW2 anti-tank ammunition, I wonder could you Editor use your influence to ascertain whether or not other youngsters have the required anti-tank gun to make use of such 16mm rounds?

bit smaller, still stop a tank pre-1970 but not really up to scratch. Our correspondant in BCN hasn't noticed any anti-tank guns knocking about.

Dear Sean,
I feel obliged by my obvious experience in such matters to tell the P.P. a thing or two.
12mm amunition was indeed used as anti-tank and armour piercing ordinance during the WW2 period, however with modern armour, you'd need a lot more than 12mm or even 16mm to "stop a tank".

I also am a man of varied hobbies and one is a sort of monitoring of the various anarchist groupings and collectives in BCN. It seems quite clear to anyone with even a scant familiarity with those people, that they're more likely to be touting cardboard guns than heavy artilery. They are a pacifist bunch in the main, and it is understandably difficult for them given their non authoritarian stance to offer any clear condemnation of such behaviour.

The modern 12mm shell, is typically used in artilery regiment assault rifles, and is used in a clip sometimes alternating with smaller 5mm shells. As such varied armed forces use this ordinance in their varied duties. My former regiment totted up quite a few "kills" as "collateral damage" used to be called in our days in Cyprus using such bullets. Though that much said a few 12mm rounds fired at point blank range (that is less than 2 metres away) would make a mess of any non armoured vehicle such as a van or car, and if targetted at the correct area might "stop a lightly armoured vehicle" such as a heavy land rover.

Can I ask Rev. Ignatius if he has the complete porcelain set yet?

I grew up in a region much afflicted by the common place existence of weaponry varying from automatic to light artillery, and feel like my tupence worth (see how I am intergrating) might be appreciated:

the 12mm bullet in a belt, implies a heavy machine gun weapon, and thus former British Army Officer resident in Eire has got it wrong.
Assault rifles only use clips.

The weapon which uses this ammunition was as the Rev. Ignatius PP suggested either a WW2 era anti-tank gun, or an Italian designed heavy machine gun, which is used for anti-aircraft fire.

I don't like the implication that our BCN correspondent is not to trusted, I hav just finished a short telephone call with the man, and he assures me that all the best positions for anti-tank artilery are already taken by the various armed forces stationed in BCN and none of these show any sign of being squated by Italian sympathetic anti-system 21-26 yr. olds. he does concede that such a hypothetical gun would be difficult to transport on foot over distance of 200metres, needing at least two people unless of course you're Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He's muttered something about the "effin Parish Priest starting this pointless conjecture".

Could you or maybe the Parish Priest fish us out a photograph of the type of belt fed 12mm heavy machine gun with or without tripod so we all know what you're talking about? I remember years ago, there used to be section in one of the weekly newspapers here in Ireland with type of photo.
And where could a reader get hold of something like that for like the "unusual christmas present idea"?

Well I don't have a photo, and my local bishop would probably frown if my personal collection and hobby was publicised in the media, but I'd reckon something like that is pretty hard to come by.
Though oddly enough, it is often harder to find the bullets to go in the gun then to come by the gun itself.
I'd reckon there's probably an illegal arms dealer connection to this, or maybe it's a left over from some nearby conflict, perhaps some refugees brought it with them, or maybe the CIA donated it.

They are *__not__* implicated in murder.
They are not charged with using the weapons in a country which has like oddles of handguns.

MAybe they are scumbags.
Maybe they are just stupid.
But where they are aint nice.
And they may stay there for upto 5 years without trial.

This charming "story" began life in a movie made in the middle eighties in the USA about the disappearance of a young American writer Charles Horman during the coup d'etat of Pinochet on Sept. 11 in Chile.
