The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Big brother puts his private eye on you

Seamus Brennan (Minister for Transport) said the Government plans to allow private companies to operate speed cameras in place of the Gardaí this morning on RTE Radio. Michael McDowell (PD minister for Justice) is also (predictably) in favour of the move.

This is a newswire, not a discussion board. Write a news story or keep your mouth shut.

That seemed like a piece of news to me, IMCer, you're the one discussing things, i think that the term i'm looking for is...go and shite, it is a habit traditionaly associated with trolls after all.

but speeders put other peoples lives at risk. better it be done by a private company than not at all.

someone who calls themself "IMCer" is not automatically speaking with a great booming editorial voice! (Normally) people volunteering with the site aren't as obnoxious...unless you poke us with a big stick.

However the point that was made, albeit in a stupid and abusive fashion, was that a two-sentence story about what you heard on the radio is not really news, interesting as that news bulletin might have been. If this was purely a form then a discussion-starter like this would be appropriate but in terms of news this is fairly remote from what Indymedia's supposed to be about.

You are apparently concerned about the brevity of the post. There are similar length posts this morning on Aceh and Indymedia being banned from Google which received no such criticism!
Worthy stories but not local news.

In terms of relevance, the story is local and relevant (criteria oft stated by IMC), and not a cut and paste job (again a requirement of IMC), and the few lines summarise exactly what was heard on the Radio this morning!

So what's your problem?

Daithi wasnt attacking you, my reading of his comments were as friendly advice.

author by Daithipublication date Wed May 21, 2003 15:51author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Thank you Pat. It's unfair when anyone posts a comment attacking a user, especially when they do it as "IMCer" (though you and kokomero and Avi H and even Jon Chance and Hatrackman and the rest of them are as much IMCers as I am). I was trying to explain why stories with original information rather than just a reference are better...it is a suggestion not a policy, and certainly no reason for "IMCer" to attack Kokomero. I don't have a 'problem' with anyone or anything...in fact my response was rather tongue in cheek (i.e. I don't really expect to be poked with a stick). Regarding the other posts mentioned above; the Aceh story is exceptionally dumb (the effort that goes into 'why are there no stories on X' could be better spent on writing a story on X....), and the Google ban is just a link and a sentence; not the best example of news, but I only stepped in here because of the unfair attack by IMCer. At one stage myself (and others) went around putting comments on all copied, over-short, etc. stories suggesting originality...but it's boring, slightly antagonistc, and turns you into a snarling grumpy giy.

The Irish Times

May 14, 2003

SECTION: CITY EDITION; MOTORS; Pg. 50

LENGTH: 342 words

HEADLINE: Lights, camera, and, er, action

BYLINE: By IAN NOCTOR

BODY:
Following the Minister for Transport's call for an expanded bus corridor network, it would seem that while there are only three active fixed cameras to slow motorists down, there's another set of cameras in the Dublin area aimed at increasing traffic speed. Mr Brennan wants to see more Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) in Dublin and to introduce them to Cork and Galway over the next 12 months. Speaking at the launch last Monday he said a more "aggressive" approach was required to satisfy the growing demand for public transport. No doubt the State's first comprehensive set of guidelines governing traffic management was influenced by information gathered by these "other" cameras.

Big brother has been monitoring motorists on the Malahide to Amiens St route in Dublin on a daily basis. But there's no risk of them getting a speeding fine. The Dublin City Council cameras are there principally to record bus times on the QBC and although the project has only been in operation for a few weeks, initial results are proving interesting.

According to Brendan O'Brien of the Council's Traffic department, at peak times buses complete the journey in half the time it takes a car. On the Fairview to Amiens St QBC there is only a small variation in the time it takes the bus to complete the journey on or off peak.

O'Brien says the cameras are helping DCC to pinpoint the areas where buses are not moving as quickly as they could be. These bottlenecks will be examined to see if there is a means to give buses priority over other forms of transport to further reduce the bus journey time.

There are plans to extend the pilot scheme to the city's other bus corridors but it hasn't yet been decided if new cameras will be bought for each route or whether the existing cameras will be moved once all the necessary data has been collected.

So, whether it's to slow traffic down or speed it up one thing is for sure, Big Brother is watching. And rest assured, there'll soon be nowhere he can't see you . . . if there's film in the camera.

This is a step towards privatising the Gardai, soon loads of hairy farmer gardai blokes will be out of a job. Their jobs will go to private security companies who will work for less pay and worse conditions. Surely Gardai should be organising a strike against this, or do they just want to sit back and let private security companies steal their jobs. Somebody wake up the gardai and explain to them what's happening, gardai don't seem to be able to grasp the concept of privatisation.
