Chavez had advance warning of coup [Greg Palast, The Guardian]

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday May 13, 2002 23:35author by GluttonMan Report this post to the editors

Greg Palast reports in the Guardian (Monday, May 13th 2002) that Hugo Chavez, the democratically elected president of Venezuela, was warned by an OPEC official in advance of the US-supported coup attempt.

The Venezuelan OPEC official warned Chavez that Arab states were planning an OPEC boycott of the USA and that this would stimulate the coup attempt.

The wily Chavez secreted loyal troops into the building which housed Carmona, the central coup plotter, and then when the coup was revealed informed Carmona that if anyone was getting killed then he would be sure to be included.

Greg Palast is the reporter/investigator that drives BBC Newsnight and wrote (among many other things "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy").

Glutton man:

This is a site for news, not reproduced stuff from newspapers, in future a link will suffice,

The article wasn't reposted - a concise summary and a link was given. This is a follow on from an earlier Indymedia.ie story

http://www.indymedia.ie/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=1939

and i was very interested to get an update.

If I _just_ post a link then how do you know if you want to click it or not? I summarised in a very concise way. Also I don't understand your implication that this is not news somehow.

You can provide a summery and context for the article and then provide a link. If the reader is interested enough they will click on the link.

Palast is an honourary member of IMC Ireland co-op and one of the best journalists on the planet.

This reposting is good and is mannerly in all ways - leave this guy alone - or I'll get greg to gang up on yiz

look above! That's EXACTLY what I did and what Eoin is complaining about. See the short summary giving context and the link attached to it, or am I misunderstanding what you're saying?

Thanks Glutton Man
I think your summary was very helpful especially as there is nothing in the link to tell anyone that this is an article by Greg Palast. I really don't get the point made by Eoin, if you had just put the link I mightn't have bothered going to have a look.
As it happens I was waiting to hear Greg Palast's angle on the coup in Venezuela as he saw it coming for a while. Furthermore your last sentence was important as it informs people who the man is and any publicity for him can only be a good thing as he is in the business of hunting down the hard facts about the rotten people at the top. So thanks again
