Thirty Left-wing MPs have written to Ofcom to press it to censor X under the Online Safety Act. The evidence of 'hate' on the platform is threadbare, but it's obvious why they want to clip its wings, says Laurie Wastell.

Racist opinion poll on Irish Times today

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday May 13, 2002 11:41author by Steve McFarlane Report this post to the editors

Please voice yourself on this poll! 78% of Irish people are saying Yes! ;(

Today's Irish Times carries the following opinion poll:

"Do you agree with the proposal of compulsory health screening for asylum-seekers entering Ireland?"

This is blatant racism and completely impractical. Why are immigrants singled out? Are we to go and 'disinfect' all the tourists as well? All the visiting dignitaries?
How would you feel if you were put under this form of treatment?

I feel this poll is promoting narrow-minded racist thinking.

Steve you are right about the poll promoting narrow minded thinking, but you are also neglecting the fact that it is in the immigrants (and Our) best interests to have health sceening (not disinfection, as you call it).
The facts are the majority of new disease and the increse in HIV is down to the immigration from countries where disease is rampent, the best solution would be to eradicate unnecessary disease from the poorer countries- afterall they are not trying to infect themselves- but until this happens we need to look out for this country and its people(black AND white, national AND non) Would it not be better to have a diverse cultured nation of HEALTHY beings?????

Thanks for the oppertunity to voice oppinion.its a cool site.....Steve

This so called "health screening" would obviously be a classic example of discrimination. If such a proposal was to be implemented, e.g. to screen for HIV, then it would or should be applied to all persons entering the country, not just people fleeing political persecution or "economic migrants".

I think its a good thing.

Allow me to explain. Person coming from a poor country maybe never seen a docter and they cancer. They come to Ireland get a health check cancer caught and he dosen't die.

What wrong with that?

Few conditions (1) Can't be grounds for refusal
(2) No waitin list
(3) FREE

To be admitted as a lawful, permanent, resident to the U.S. I had to prove, medically, that I did not have any venereal disease, or T.B.
Is not this a reasonable precaution in the interests of public health? A good use of government regulation? And rational public health measures are the main reason that life-expectancy has increased so much in the Western world. Why are these measures racist?
