Shannon protest

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday April 28, 2003 19:54author by Laurence Report this post to the editors

Mary Harney in Shannon

Mary Harney had today the wrath of anti-war protestors visited upon her as she spoke at a Shannon Chamber of Commerce endorsment of the development of shannon town centre. The proceedings of the towns business elite who had gathered to pay homage was overshadowed by the public speak out that ran concurrent with it outside the marquee erected for the day. Banners were raised by the protestors as Harney entered the marquee and anger was vocalised as she planted (ahem) a tree. On her exit the protestors lined her walk to a waiting car and draped banners over it as the (wench) war criminal departed. Inside the marquee harney had attempted to defuse te situation with the interesting observation that 'the war was over.'

Have ye dirty shower of useles bastards nothing better to do with yer time? Do ye not relaise that the war is now over in Iraq.So why should the U.S. not use our facilities here in shannon to refuel there aeroplanes. Why are ye trying so hard to lose valueable money for our local economy. If they do not refuel in shannon they will just use another airport, and u can be sure that the local community there would welcome them with open arms.Isnt it funny how so many people could get time off work today to protest in shannon OH i forgot most of ye useless fuckers dont have any jobs,ye just live off the state. So why dont ye all just fuck off back to what ever shit hole ye come from and leave the local community here in shannon to get on with our lives!!! YE ARE NOT WANTED HERE!!!!!

Jesus Mary [or should I say "Shannon Resident"]- thats a bit strong now. I've been looking at you across the table from this internet cafe for 25 minutes and its pretty clear that you're pissed off.

Politics is a dirty game mary but trying to pass yourself off as a resident of Shannon is pathetic, particularly as anyone with a brain knows that "living of the state" has been what us people of Shannon have done [quite successfully] for over 30 years. Only for the dole and the grant aid and the aeroflot stopover we'd have been rightly fucked. The cold war suited us much better than this Bush shit so don't go trying to deceive people into thinking the people of Shannon are against the protesters - we're with them 100%.

Now if you're not out of this internet cafe within 5 minutes I'm going to have to turn this webcam on you...

What would be most interesting would be a balance sheet with the total amount of money gained from refuelling on one side (even including duty-free sales to US troops) and the other side with the costs of this refuelling, including the ATC charges the Irish taxpayer paid. As a seperate subtotal, add the total amount spent by the state on security for Shannon. I suspect that even without the security, we'd be in the red - and heavily so with the security bill. I'd put in a Freedom of Information request, but the amendment has been passed and I suspect that I'm no longer entitled to that information. I'll be required to pay the bill through taxes of course...

Well as one who works in Shannon I would like to thank all who were involved in the protest for "welcoming" Ms. Harney, unfortunately I was stuck at work so could not make it.

To that deluded Shannon resident read a bit and educate yourself. The Invasion of Iraq is far from over!

the profit (blood money) figure been published TWICE now in the Irish Times as 9 million euro including ALL handling charges and what the "lads" spend on duty free - these were figures given out by Aer Rianta ........
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I'd agree on your general opinion though I doubt they're going to release detailed info on the bill - 400 cops on a saturday DOES NOT come cheap - mind you its more to do with "keeping in " with our lords and masters in the final analysis the money/jobs in Shannon. Harney said as much yesterday with her "American friends" speech (same "friends" who gunned down 13 and injured 70 unarmed shia protestors yesterday)

And thats OUR money thats being spent DEFENDING America's un requested "liberation" of Iraq

good to see the protest and the stoney, wagon face on her
another good will meeja junket ruined !

Much as I hate responding to trolls, I work in Shannon because that is where the company I work for is based, I work in the Shannon Free Zone.
I would hate to live near so many criminals too, Shannon is generally not a bad place most of the soldiers that pass through are too young and dumb to know what they have let themselves in for. They only land here and take off again within hours even Rumsfeld was only here for a few hours. The worst offenders is the resident of the whitehouse and his regime who are the greatest threat to the world at the moment.
The Irish "friends" do not live in Shannon but up the country and work in the dail.
