The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

World Bank Boycott

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Sunday April 27, 2003 15:14author by Aisling Wheeler - World Bank Boycott Europeauthor email aislingw at care2 dot com Report this post to the editors

Speaker's Tour

The World Bank Boycott speaker’s tour.

The World Bank Boycott is an international campaign that demands an end to socially and environmentally destructive World Bank policies and projects through grassroots financial and political power.

The World Bank Boycott Europe is taking a Speakers' Tour around England, the Netherlands, Belgium , France and possibly Ireland during May, and the organisers would be happy to hear from any groups who would like the tour to stop in their community.

The Boycott is an international coalition of grassroots groups from the Global South, the US and Europe, which seeks to increase financial and political pressure on the World Bank by discouraging local institutions from investing in its bonds, from which it raises 80% of its money.

The format of the Speakers Tour is very flexible, and the aim is to respond to the specific requests of individual audiences as far as possible. The evenings will involve film screenings, discussions, and a presentation by a Senegalese man whose community has been directly affected by World Bank policies.

If you would be interested in attending such an evening, or if you have any questions, please contact: wbboycott@aseed.antenna.nl, or contact us in the A SEED office.

The tour has some spare dates after the 17th of May, and they are willing to come to Ireland if there are groups that would like to hear what they have to say. It would be great if they could speak in Dublin, Cork and one other city. This is quite last-minute so I need to know asap if groups would like to host them, it just involves having a venue with a video, and letting people know about it. Just email me or the address above.

discouraging the local instutions from investing in its bonds by asking the people who manage their funds for them not to invest in their funds in World Bank Bonds and better still to invest in ethical bonds. Don't think there is too much ethical high risk or ethical blue chip? Whatever. Just by getting the fund managers of their investments not too invest in World Bank Bonds.
