The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

McDowell joins Labour

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday April 21, 2003 14:34author by Adomnan Report this post to the editors

'Business leader' joins Dun Laoghaire Labour Party

Today it has been announced that Cllr. Vincent McDowell has joined Labour

Vincent McDowell was a member of the Green Party but he left when the local green party did not nominate him to run in the last Dáil election, instead nominating Cllr Ciarán Cuffe.

Today it has been announced that McDowell has joined Labour. The Labour website describes McDowell as a "business leader in Dún Laoghaire"

Labour did a dirty careerist deal with McDowell to get him into their ranks. McDowell has been gaurenteed a nomination at the next general election by Pat Rabbitte, despite what local members might want. McDowell says that he will not contest the next local alection, as he knows the dual mandate will be outlawed.

Vincent McDowell is a wel known low wage employer and bombeen man. He voted in favour of the bin tax.

It's true, he's joing the oldest constituency organisation in the country - at 78 he's their youngest member!

He's Nuala Ahern MEP's father.

FF Dun Laoghaire might be mpore younger than their counterparts in the Labour party but their young people are careerists. You shouldn't be boasting about people like Ronan O'Keeffe, Jenny Allen and Ciarán O'Shea.

Ye are all careerist sleeze.

With 380 votes in the General Election McDowell will make a great addition to D/L Labour - no wonder he's not running for re-election to the local county council!

I'm sure the "careerist" members of D/L Ógra will be pleased with the free PR - it might help their careers!

P.S. the UCD College Tribune is a fascist rag filled with "careerist" hacks that have no lives.

Long Live Fianna Fáil!

FF members are careerists why else would they join FF.

BTW The publicity that FFers get here is of no use to them fuck all people here vote FF.

Another thing I would agree with you about the UCD College Tribune, it is full of careerist hacks that could to with a few lessons in journalism. I am opposed to left wing and right wing careerists unlike yourself.

I think you'll find that many student journalists are pretty damn careerist and certainly don't try to hide it. I've been proud to work with the College Tribune for the past year, it's a newspaper with some very talented and in some cases brilliant people who provide a massively important function for UCD students. Those contributors with strong left-wing views don't try to hide them and the paper's few opponents are generally quite bitter in their arguments. Mistakes are made of course and certain articles and stories in the paper do annoy or offend but on the whole it's an excellent and improving publication.

The Tribune, by the way, is out today, as are the nominations for the Smedia (student media) awards in which I think both the Trib and the Observer will feature well in.

This FF hater guy is really a shite stirrer. He is just coming on here to stir it up a bit. That's why he's attacking The College Tribune et al. I bet its the same person that's calling himself "gg" who is stiring it up on another thread.

Just to say I believe the UCD College Tribune provides much need balance to the UCD Student Media and also keeps the hacks in the UCD SU in line. Best of luck with the award!

On YFF - there are bad apples in every organisation, the poor FFers can't help themselves.... have pitty, other examples of losers:

LAB Emmett Stagg (Newspapers in a park)
FG Michael Lowery (Back Handers),
PDs Michael Keating (VAT & DRUGS),
College Tribune Alison Gibney (Drugs & Lies),

Cheers,

Max.
