The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Criminal Damage De Fence: Call for help

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday April 03, 2003 14:40author by gillies macbainauthor email cranagh at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

this is a mailing about a stay in limerick prison where i briefly met karen fallon. ( shannon court case ). i am now using my charge of criminal damage to the constituency office of the minister for de fence, to complain about the government and the minister under provisions of the constitution. i urgently need some contact with mary kelly or those acting on her behalf, or other similar initiatives - to avoid duplication of effort. also, i will plead not guilty, not denying what i have done - but justifying it under international law / treaties / tribunals / principles . . . i obviously need to consult with others to carry this off - can you help me ?

i am just back from a holiday in limerick prison
for spontaneously donating some red paint which
to my mind vastly improved the facade of the
constituency office of the minister for de fence.

( is this a proper pastime to be taking up at 60
i wonder ? )

the prison is fairly luxurious - hot and cold running water, en suite rooms with 20 channel colour t v in each. sunny exercise yards, pool table, hand ball, library etc etc. free toothpaste, comb, clean clothes, four meals a day etc. etc. cleaner and much warmer than my home place. and not as tough as an english public school ( c 1953 ) as i explained to the governor.

i must get some tattoos. i felt positively naked first day in the handball yard. the murderers and armed robbers and petty shop lifters are very easy going and pleasant.

kylie minogue, jennifer lopez, and saint therese of lisieux feature very prominently on all cell walls. i did not meet any tax evaders. perhaps they are off in a separate wing somewhere ?

hunger strikers get semi solitary confinement, and
still get four meals a day - in the cell. food weighed coming in and again when taken out. brief visit to the doctor daily. priest or govenor if you wish.

judge mary martin, who seems to differ from me
considerably in the matter of decor, proposes to restore the former colour scheme of the office facade - ( yellow actually, since you ask, to represent the spirit of current policy on neutrality and de fence ) - entirely at my
expense.

no word from the minister - but ms. martin seems to like me and has invited me back for 24 april next. come along if you like. remember, if she senses a 'demo' she will adjourn - be sure of it. roscrea is anyway too friendly a town for such things. we don't want to be confrontational.

meanwhile i am launching : P A I N T

( people against the irish neutrality traitors ) ,

i am not a pacifist. i see 'neutrality' as being a sovereignty based approach to an independent foreign policy and to basic national self respect. i am not even a strong nationalist
either, but a localist. a thurles co.tipperary european.

and am continuing to collect signatures for T H A W ( thurles anti war. ) ( 2500 signatures to date. )

the minister has pulled out of a meeting with THAW, ( it seems that he suddenly has a busier schedule than earlier expected. )

as the first item on the agenda of all viable organisations in this country is 'the split', ( to quote brendan behan ), P A I N T has decided unanimously to save time and split now, on launch. there will be two divisions to this
spontaneous uprising of people who are sick to the
back teeth of ressurrected redmondites and alpha male fawning poodles who have rushed to put on the jewelled period style collars of lap dogs to be taken for a walk on the lead around a bloody middle eastern mystery tour by neo imperialist corporatist fascists recruited from the back
rooms of profiteering oil companies . . .

sorry lost the run of myself there . . . . .

- o yes. P A I N T will be split from the start into two divisions of self appointed 24 / 7 D I Y office decorators -

(a) hawkish ( hard gloss ) and (b) doveish ( emulsion ).

don't let us down.

If you're the same Gillies McBain that I'm thinking of, then I was one of the 88 people who voted for you in 1997. That was before I realised that voting is pointless...

Keep up the good work with THAW and please don't pay for Smith's redecoration.
