Tense standoff at dail - Joe Higgins and Many others dragged off the road

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 02, 2003 22:05author by roving reporter with broken finger Report this post to the editors

standoff at dail

1000 or more people began sitting down and linking arms after Police attempted to split their ranks in two so the TDs could be seen to drive out the front door. An old man who was attempting to get his homemade sign was jostled and manhandled after sitdown started in earnest - lots of shame shame to the gardai from seated 1000+

1/2 hour later vans containing Riot Police appeared 40 or so and they immediately began to attempt to clear the road for the cars to come out.

People remained sitting as people were picked off and dragged off one at a time - Joe higgins dragged roughly by arms and legs by 4/5 riotpolicemen - he was in fromt row beside IMC RR who now has a broken finger from being dragged off.

People were defiant and many returned to the front lines of the sit-down after being dragged off.

This is still going on though standing up linked arms blocades are now being used by the protesters.

lots of Regular gardai there too

2 Hospitalisations have been confirmed by people at the scene - ambulance did indeed arrive

Helicopters overhead

Messy standoff

Further reports asap

'Get out of the way or you are going to get hurt'

Quote from one of the Riot Police while involved in a dispute about police tactics and the fact that one of the people in his way was wheelchair bound

td's still inside - xcept for Joe obviously

haven't been able to confirm if other Political Parties Elected Reps are taking part in Blocade

Just more silly nonsense from students and champagne socialists. You people represent nobody. BTW, you're trying to defend the regime of Saddam by doing this. I hope you can all sleep at night, going around doing what you're doing.

Our day is come Josef. If you like war so much why ar'nt you in Iraq with those whom you extol so much. You are just one more armchair hypocrite!

author by authoritypublication date Wed Apr 02, 2003 23:29author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Your job is to believe what you're told to believe, accept what you're told to accept, and do (or don't do) exactly what you're told.

Understand?

Fifteen years ago when authority told that Saddam was a friend and ally you went with that line too.

(Not even the aggressors in this war say that their motivation is a concern for the human rights of Iraqi's. That's fodder to get the mob and the authority freaks like yourself on board. And I have yet to meet the anti-war protestor that sees Saddam Hussain as anything more than a monster).

Go bay for some blood like you're told!

Just got back from Pearse St garda station where I was arrested for a Breach of the PEACE. How ironic.
I was sitting on the ground at the last gate that was lining the middle of the demo. Got pulled off the ground by riot police and arrested, while most other people were just let go. I didn't even put up any resistance, just let them pull me away and I was the only person I seen arrested.

so f**k off you asshole and go tear down someone else's wall in cyberspace - and yes I have given Joe shit about that stupid obnoxious speech to his face and at least he has the courtest to drop the subject and not harp on about it like the speech was some great victory for the SP

Gwan Pat C ask the hard questions! And don't you think you and aidan are making are making a bit too free with the love in. Its making me nauseous.

Hope you can sleep in your bed Josef, after watching iraqi men, women and children begging and clawing desperately at troops distributing aid. Iraqi men, women and children had water, food, electricity and homes before the so called 'liberators' arrived, since our troops 'liberation' of Iraq.Iraqis are all starving, dying of thirst and hunger and living in rubbles that once were their homes. Its our aid agencies Oxfam, save the children etc who have to pick up the pieces of iraqi peoples lives. Who have to try and fix the destruction caused by troops. There was no need for this war, to go in and disrupt and destroy thousands of iraqi civillians homes and water supplies. So don't complain if theres a sharp tax rise, afterall you wanted to 'liberate' the iraqis didn't you. So you'd better be prepared to fork out the cash to rebuild their homes, water and electricity supplies.

Well now, it was good to C Joe making a stand (or a sit down) last night.

i could drag up the past and say it was a pity Joe didnt do the same on March 1st, but i'll leave the past to fools like "red hot trot".

fair play to Joe.

as for my virtual warrior, well isnt it better to see aidan & myself at peace rather than at war?

strictly platonic , i hasten to add.

The Guards once again appeared annonymously last night outside the Dail, just as they did on the March last May for Reclaim the Streets.
I phoned the Garda Press Office this morning, all guards when on duty MUST display their ID numbers. However, the riot outfits that they are allocated have no way of attaching their numbers. Therefore they effectively operate in secrecy as there is no way of identifying them unless you recognise their faces.
Twice in one year? Currently there 2 seperate tribunals investigating the Guards. Will they never learn or have some respect for the citizens they are supposedly protecting?
The Minister for Justice said they broke their own laws by appearing without their ID. Let's not leave it at that, you can make a complaint about this behaviour at any Gardai Station or to the Gardai Compaints Board, either in person or in writing to Block 1, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1.
Demand an answer, let them know we are keeping our own records on them. Ask questions...ask questions.......ask questions.

They can't have sent out the riot police for the craic! They obviously knew there would be muppets there who were going to try and hijack the protest.

I didn't see any tear gas, battons, plastic shields etc, it wasn't PSNI tactics so stop whinging!

Only they thought they would provoke some of the crowd into reacting, by using OTT tactics and being generally violent and aggressive.

I witnessed one protester in a minor scuffle withe three riot police. The protesters were completely peaceful, the only other incident I heard of that could be described as agressive was when an elderly lady who was part of the protest threw her banner at the police obviously in complete anger and disgust at what she was witnessing!
