Jump To Comment: 4 3 2 1... that being from Donegal is or should be considered in any way particularly significant in itself. I am certainly not suggesting that the inhabitants of that fine county most dear to my heart are more or less prone to imperialist tendencies than anyone else ....
What I was getting at was this:
Blair is not an "Englishman" in the narrow sense of the word (despite his nicely manicured public school accent). He is a product of the Irish Diaspora (who has been co-opted into the British -or if you prefer Anglo-American imperial - establishment).
He is not an "Englishman with a mission from God" but rather "a Paddy, who went to elocution lessons and made it good in the second generation, with a mission from God" ....
Like it or not, that's what you've got ...
Make of it what you will .....
But let's not be too simplistic in our historical analogies .... crude comparisons with Cromwell do neither man justice ......
Being from Donegal won’t protect you from imperialist tendencies. Kaisers and Tsars weren’t descended from the Caesars but they were still inspired by them.
Mr. Blair is the son of Irish emigrants from Co. Donegal .....
Hence the Cromwell analogy is a little strained ....
He is actually the personification of the upwardly mobile Irish Diaspora ....
