The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

War turning Soddem into a matyr

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday March 25, 2003 10:37author by soldiers 3 officers 0 Report this post to the editors

This illegal war is turning Soddem into a matyr, whereas before the war, Soddem was unpopular. This war has enabled Soddem to score a vital popularity points, by rallying already oppressed Iraqis against coalition aggressors/invaders.

Even Iraqis opposed to soddem have joined the fight against allied coalition forces, after witnessing first hand the brutality and non discriminate aggression against all Iraqis dished out by advancing coalition forces. You cannot bomb a people into rising up against soddem, bombing ordinary innocent Iraqis is doing soddems work for him. In effect coalition forces are helping soddem get rid of his own people, something soddem couldn't have done by himself.

One thing about Iraqis is yes they hate soddem, but also they are extremely proud, tribal and territorial, if coalition forces are storm trooping into their lands, coalition forces can expect the same that soddem got when he tried to subjugate tribal Iraqis.

Comrades,
One of the striking things about the war so far is the propaganda machine of the west is being exposed as a lie, and also is being outdone by the likes of Iraq TV and Al-Jazeera.

We have been lead to believe that there was no or little support for the regime in Iraq.

The big question is, and this could be the un-doing for the allied coallition,

Who do the Iraqi's hate more?
One of their own, or an occupational force?
Living in the north of Ireland, we are well aware of the way people react at the heavy times..........you usually fall in behind your own, and the same should be said and thought of the Iraqi's.

Sorry Mr Blair and Mr Bush, you have no chance of seeing this people throwing flowers at your troops............, grenades and bullets seems more likely!

I think they thought that their relatively easy victory in Afghanistan (even though it is still a mess there) meant things would be easy in Iraq. I can pick up Iraqi TV on satellite and it is a nationalistic frenzy with Arab (not just Iraqi) songs, vox pop interviews with people in Baghdad talking about how they will fight the invaders, old ladies waving guns and so on.
The pictures of scared-looking US POWs are also frequently displayed.
