The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

offsite link Thank Lockdowns for the Worst Budget in History Sat Nov 22, 2025 13:00 | Will Jones
We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

offsite link Taxpayers Are Charged for the BBC Whether They Like it or Not Sat Nov 22, 2025 11:00 | Charlotte Gill
It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

For Green TD's - Y'all better learn quick or dustbin of Irish History Awaits

These UK MPs at least understand the world round them

Unlike those who refused to protest dangerous - and documented police tactics outside the Dail during symbolic Blocade after 'Shannon' Vote http://www.uk.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=58571&group=webcast

Paul Gogarty shouted 'Shut-up and Listen' 7 times to the non-violent protestors who staged a 'die-in' at the gates of Hades (oh sorry, i meant the Dail)! He also refused to identify himself. Very few knew his name and party affiliation.

Such demeaning cowardice and authoritarianism is most unwelcome. Such projection of moral cowardice towards those who feel passionately (in contrast with the political expedience and pseudo-ethics of our 'representatives'; bar ever-faithful exceptions), in the spirit of non-violence, against Dail Eireanns' complicity in mass slaughter and destruction, presently being orchestrated in Iraq.

So as the non-violent female and male resisters were being forcibly removed from the entrance/exit to Hades (oops, there i go again), the Green Party coward showed his true colours and sided with the 'not so peaceful' guardians of the state.

The State desires for us to have a petty protest, as long as they may have their genocidal war. There is no response to 'Non-Violent Resistance' in the Templemore or Dail Eireann training manuals; hence unprofessional conduct and amoral provocation 30 minutes before everybody would have been wilfully proceeding towards the US Embassy! Well done to all non-violent resisters involved.

In peaceful loving solidarity,
Damien

No-one was leaving from leaving the Dáil. Paul Gogarty was welcome to join the protest, address the crowd etc. He was fully entitled to come and go as he pleased. There is a thing called PUBLIC TRANSPORT. Paul Gogarty could have gotten a bus to any appointments, or even a taxi (which he can afford on his wages!)

I find it rich for a Green Party member to be attacking anti-war protesters for be "fascists". Many of the people involved in the sit-down on Thursday have played a role in counteracting fascists. I'm a member of the Socialist Party, we have a record on taking on Fascists right across Europe.

Simon what have you and your party done against Fascism?

He was in the middle of the blockade and could see Inspector "animal" Keenan.Had he sat down with ye, then Keenan wouldn't have been so thuggish. What the hell is a Green doing being so concerned about his car anyway?

I'm sure that the British MPs John McDonell and Jeremy Corbyn were not prevented from leaving the Parliament unlike The Dail where Green TD Paul Gogarty was prevented from leaving. What is it with this fascist element of the anti-war movement ? Arent we all supposed to be on the same side ?
