The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Pavement Messages Against The War (Maynooth)

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday March 22, 2003 01:07author by LD Report this post to the editors

Tonight as Baghdad burns the passers-by in Maynooth village are signing their names and writing messages on the pavement in protest against this illegal War.

Tonight @ around 9pm a large CND symbol was drawn in chalk and covered with flowers and candles in the village square. The title above it said 'This War is Not in Our Name'. People stopped to write their signatures and clear messages against the War to our government.
The ordinary people of Maynooth young and old were pleasantly suprised to have a public display in the village where every-one could take a minute to think about the people of Iraq and the nightmare they are going through tonight.
People were sincerely thankful to have a simple opportunity to sign their names and express their feelings.
I hope it's still there tomorrow so our local FF politicians can read the messages that have been written for them and hang their heads in shame!

An hour earlier at the main traffic lights junction in the village a protester wrote 'FF = Liars' in chalk.
A couple of cars stopped and said they were calling the gardai, the protester continued and later the Gardai drove slowly by as the protester finished the sign. Suprisingly the Gardai ignored him and allowed him to finish his message!

That's interesting because exactly the same was done in Cork city centre earlier today by an artist and member of the Cork Anti-War Campaign. Great idea!

I assisted in both of the above - I gave the local gardai who observed events my name and address - I met and spoke to everyone who passed through maynooth town 'public' square tonight between 10pm and Midnight (300 + in 2 hours) and they all (except for two drunk middle aged men in suits - I wonder who they are? - I don't actually wonder anymore who they are - life is too short to be intimidated by FF hacks/UK soccer Fans) signed their names to 'This war is not in our name' without anyone chanting slogans or even talking to most of them.

You repeatedly try to claim our actions against this criminal war as somehow supporting your position. - They do not. You are a war Monkey and The Republican Adminisration is the grinder.

This is now common opinion among large sections of voters. How many signatures from one small town in his constituency did Biffo get presented with by his cowardly doktor yesterday? - 4000 (yes four thousand Plus) collected in one shopping centre in one week by the most mild mannered bunch of folks I have had the privilige to meet in my lifetime.

At least Blair (who I detest) has the spine to awnser openly questions from his peers in front of his nation.

You bertie are a coward and a slimy one.

I worked for an acquaintance of yours in the 80's called Nobby Q. Feeding Sadam's armies in the Iran Iraq war with Irish Beef at the Irish Taxpayers expense - I was 14 years old labelling beef that was two years past sell by date - my instructions - new label - add two years to the date and 2 kg to the weight - It took me years to find out exactly what I was being employed to do by FF funders and when I found out it sickened me to the core.

You are a pawn now like Sadam and his opponents were then and young people now know it. The power of education and the net.

Even your well known colleagues children are turning against them.

How do you sleep?
