British TV Comedy Has Lost its Class Sat Nov 22, 2025 17:00 | Finlay McLaren
The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Thank Lockdowns for the Worst Budget in History Sat Nov 22, 2025 13:00 | Will Jones
We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Taxpayers Are Charged for the BBC Whether They Like it or Not Sat Nov 22, 2025 11:00 | Charlotte Gill
It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Perhaps fucked off SWP activist above could start to explain why SSAW/SWP played no role in the student strikes? Or why they then tried to claim credit for other people's actions?
The SAW website has been updated to include the details of 18 groups across belfast and across the north, the signs of a mass movement of one?!?!
Wise up!
Youth Against War organised hugely succesful walkouts against the war in schools up and down the country. Thousands showed their opposition to the war by going on strike. This was one of the biggest achievements of the anti-war movement in this country so far.
What was the SWP's reaction to this? They went on indymedia (and in the Belfast Telegraph) and tried to claim the credit for other people's actions in the name of their non-existent front "Schools Against War" / "Students against War" / "School Students Against War" / "Whatever the name is this week Against War".
They followed that up by trying to downplay the size of the protests and by claiming that they had just happened without any organisation. They even had the cheek to attack Youth Against War - the people who called and built the protests.
Now they are wriggling around and trying to portray everyone else as "sectarian" and mean for not letting them away with it.
So Dan and the various anonymous SWP members who were so full of bluster and bullshit let's have a straight apology to the rest of the anti-war movement. It could go something like this:
"We acknowledge that the SWP and its various fronts had absolutely nothing to do with the 5 March school student strikes. In fact the couple of school students who are in the SWP didn't even take part in the strikes. We are very sorry for trying to claim otherwise. We admire the excellent work which Youth Against War has done amongst school students and we promise to keep our mouths shut until we have something constructive to say".
You can send a copy to the Belfast Telegraph too.
Remember Kronstadt! Remember the deformed workers state of soviet Russia! Remember the infighting on the left. Wasn't that funny! Hey King Mob! Once again showing your intelligence. Sure I support shit being stirred.
there were massive walkouts here in New york on thurday from high and middle schools. Kids came into Manhattan from all 5 boroughs and congregated around Union Sq where speeches poetry and song regailed the crowd. Many of the participants who had bunked off school were 11 or 12 years old. they later joined with an older crowd at hillary Cintons office (she supports the war) and moved from there to a rally of 7 or 8 thousand at washington Sq park. it seems that school students enjoy far greater mobilisatin and militancy than their older siblings in the colleges. In part this is due to the fact that many of the academic staff who opppose the war are against striking and stopping classes, figuring that A) their work is too important or B) their work isnt part of the productive aparatus and so doesnt impact capitalism directly. both of these assertions are insane but we are talking abuot academia so the flaws in critique are legion.
in other news arrests are being made as i write in washington dc at an international womens day anti war demo. uncommercial radio star amy goodman has been busted close to the fence of the white house, closer to the building than any demo has come for decades apparently.
its odd, your comment.
In fact, you could be accused of using the precise style of tactics, and strategy, that Mr Bush is using at present.
Specifically.
"I know. I'll sidestep allegations of the SWP hijacking an event they had nothing to do with, by claiming that we need to have unity on this issue, The old with us or against us shuffle. Hell. Yeah. To criticise the SWP is to criticise the anti war effort I tell you. The proletariat 'll be too dumb to notice that one."
The means determine the end, dear dan. You insult me with your presupposition of my analytical incapacity. Your wit, in this matter is matched only by your passionate committment to tellings of truth.
Do the SWp give classes in obfuscation there Dan.
See you gotta love this, for attack the article, the article has facts and makes a case compared to some of the drivel the swp have shoveled at us this is an intelligent piece.
You then go on to make a half assed apology ignore the main thrust of the article (essentially the swimmers invented a front group, and then finish up with a call for unity and ignore the backfighting.
Newsflash Danny you swp are causing the damage by barging into the middle and trying to take credit for other peoples work so you can raise your parties miniscule profile you alienate and piss people off.
Shut the fuck up I think theres some college students you can pimp out to sell your papers for you
As secretary of Ingrowing "Toenails against the War" I sympathise with Dan Buckley and Schools Against the War. After all we supported and called for the March 5 school walkouts also and like Schools Against the War none of our members came out.
We too had a good reason. Unfortunately our members all have sore feet and couldn't be expected to walk anywhere. We did show solidarity by putting Stop the War stickers on the basins we were bathing our bleeding toes in.
Like Dan we can claim credit for the success of the day. Our website, which is also visited by many people who can walk properly, played a big role in organising the protests.
Dan, would you be interested in joining us in setting up a new group - or could you get other SWP members to help? We would like to set up "People who set up organisations against the war Against the War".
I've been helping the other side! :-)
Amazing, I think I've found an anti-war organisation that is not a front for some SWP or other clapped-out Trot organisation. Check it out. Don't let the SWMers in on it, or they might set up an Irish Section of this great movement. Shannon would ever become a stickier situation if they did.
Why is it that nearly every organisational front is called youth against war, socialist youth, revolutionary youth, Ogra Shinn Fein (Sinne Fein youth), connelly youth.
I'm 18, i dont describe myself as a young person, i describe myself as someone who wants to tear the head of the system.
First of good on you for walking out, but we aren’t your enemy, it’s the war and the warmongers. Here is the offending article in question, but why the hell are you so sour? Where does it say we organised a march on the Falls? In our press release we said we wanted to organise marches to the city centre from every section of the city. You should join in organising a march from your school with others from other schools on the falls.
By the way, we haven’t renamed our group or ditch schools against war for students against war. I think the journalist just changed the name accidentally between the fax machine and her computer terminal.
On the suspensions, it is disgraceful what has happened. Our members have told us of countless cases of school students being locked into classes etc. there was no walkouts at Methody and Bangor Grammar, as well as countless other schools, for precisely this reason. We are organising a petition to be taken round schools and sent to the Education Department… in the real world.
Also, there are lots of anti-war groups being established. I think its brilliant that so many people are seizing the initiative. These people shouldn’t be stopped. I would also be ecstatic if there was Dan Buckleys against the war, (if there are any out there please contact me, we could do something like Dave Gorman did and really confuse George Bush).
I’m glad to hear that schoolteachers and other education workers yesterday established an anti-war group, I think we should all encourage teachers to join this and also to join in the walkouts when the bombing starts. That’s perhaps something you might want to do at St Marys, talk to your teachers about joining in walkouts.
There is also a group established at Aquinas, not sure about Meánscoil, to be honest I’ve never heard of it.
Walkouts 'The tip of the Iceburg' says youth group
By Claire Regan
ONE of the youth groups behind an anti-war protest which saw hundreds of pupils across Northern Ireland walk out of school warned today that the action is "only the tip of the iceberg".
Students Against War, which supported the walk-outs along with Youth Against the War, said today there was similar action and rallies planned for the "day the bombs start dropping".
The groups are claiming victory after hundreds of pupils walked out of scores of schools at lunchtime yesterday despite warnings that many of them would face suspension.
Students Against War organiser Dan Buckley said: "These walkouts are just the tip of the iceberg as to what we can do in stopping this war.
"We are aware that a lot of schools did not have the chance to walk out today because of the threat of sanctions put on pupils by senior staff."
And very hush hush....
Best post in a while keep up the good work
I must say again how great it is too see the StMary's kids taking a stance. Next time there's a walkout I may go up and join in, haven't been there in a while!
Did any of the teachers support the walkout? The teachers there were alwayd a bit lefty (in a wishy washy liberal way) so hopefully some of them supported it.
Where does this 'Ingrowing Toenails Against the War' meet?
Has the Meánscoil or Aquinas set anything up yet?
