The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Gathering says 'not in our name Bertie' at Spire of light;

In related news, 70 Irish lawyers say Irish Government is acting illegally

.

An illegal package was posted in the General Post Office on O'Connell street today. Addressed to the head of the Iraqi Red Crescent, it contains three packets of medicine. Like the war machines passing through Shannon, it is on its way to Iraq.

Across the road, under a blue sky and the shadow of the spire of light, a circle formed for an Ash Wednesday anti-war vigil.

Some had come after court appearances and jail time for their acts of non-violent resistance to the Irish governments complicity in acts of terrorism against the Iraqi people. Others were tourists and Irish citizens passing who were drawn to the circle to say that blood should not be spilt in their name. The blood may be on your hands Bertie, but it is not on ours.

In an act of symbolic defiance, Ciaron O'Reilly burnt his high court injunction served on him recently by Air Rianta. US and Nestle dollars also formed the tiny fire pyre. The black ashes were then used by people on their foreheads. Not in our name, we said.

In related news, the normally silent Irish legal profession has spoken loudly. More than 70 Irish lawyers today signed a public statement opposing the planned US/British war on Iraq.

Describing the Irish Government's support for the war as "criminal", the group said the Irish Government's support for the US war preparations breaches the principles of both domestic and international law and, by providing facilities at Shannon Airport to the US military, the Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition is guilty of serious criminal conduct.

*Resistance is fertile folks*

Any chance some of the 70 anti-war lawyers would donate their services to help the various people being charged for protesting for the same peace?
Perhaps the GG legal support group might get in touch with them to that end. It would also be a good idea to have at least one decent lawyer on standby who would provide legal advice for arrestees at future protests.
Those charged at Shannon did not have access to any lawyer until they were brought to court from the police stations (despite requests from some to speak to a lawyer).

So now we know who the real criminals are: Harney and Ahern. Surely some action can be taken against these people through the courts? Why are they allowed continue with their criminal acts? Is the statement of the 70 lawyers available? If there is a reliable basis for their assessment, then surely there must be some way to make F.F. and the PeeDees pay for their criminality.

The real criminals are the despots and terorists who make war necessary. Nothing can alter this fundamental fact. Stop looking at the trees, marvel at the wood that supports your freedoms.

Does freedom need support?

Yes, a bit of a play on the phrase "can't see the wood for the trees".

It's simple to trace evil back to it's root causes, but the peculiarity of evil is that it hides itself.
It's seems silly to me that you're calling Ahern and Harney criminals, when the real villains are plain to see.

Does the existence of murderers mean that muggers are not criminals?

"The real criminals are the despots and terorists who make war necessary" --Seanin

War is not necessary when there could be other better means.
If you're putting a screw into a piece of wood, do you use a mallet or a screw-driver?

If you're in a hurry you use a hammer (mallet if you like) - In carpentary parlance a big hammer is referred to as an 'American screwdriver' (I shit you not!) if you're using it to drive in a screw - normally on floor boards.

Those who say that war is always wrong are simply not facing the truth about hamankind. Either that or they lack enough experience of the world to make an informed decision. War is occasionally necessary and in this case definitely is.
