The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Build for the Cork march on Saturday, 8 March!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday February 26, 2003 02:09author by Fintan Lane - Cork Anti-War Campaignauthor email corkantiwar at hotmail dot comauthor phone 087 1258325 Report this post to the editors

Cork anti-war march and rally

A mass anti-war rally and march will be held in Cork city on Saturday, 8 March. Organised by the broad-based Cork Anti-War Campaign, the demonstration will assemble on Daunt Square at 1pm, wind its way through the busiest parts of the city centre, and finish at Emmet Place by the Opera House. Street performers have been invited to participate and, following a short number of speeches, there will be open-air music.

CAWC has produced thousands of A2 posters and tens of thousands of leaflets to advertise this demonstration, and we're hoping that it will be the largest political demonstration seen in Cork for many years.

We are also hopeful that anti-war activists in the county and beyond will organise buses to come to Cork on the day. This demonstration has the potential to be huge if a concerted effort is made to build for it. On March 8th, if you aren't otherwise occupied, please do come to Cork (spend the weekend!) and let's make it clear that the anti-war movement is here to stay!!

Finally, it appears on the horizon, a competitor for the Cork Peace Alliance.

Well folks, there's also a demo on in Shannon that day to mark Inernational Womens Day / Womens Global Strike.

So ye'll be spoiled for choice in the weeks to come, what with this and reclaiming Paddys Day.
Ah, the possibilities.......

The demo in Shannon has been advertised for months. Incidentally the 8th of march is also international women's day and the 4th global women's strike. But hey there are some strikes that is ok to scab upon!

What, so the women in Cork can't have a protest march for international womens day in their own city? Most people from around the country will be going to Shannon the week before. You can't expect people to be going there every weekend!
As far as I know, intyernational womens day will be recognised in the organisation of the protest. Therefore it will be a solidarity strike. Chill out.

Cork Peace Alliance participates in and fully supports Cork Anti-War Campaign

instead of competing protests why not go ahead and have a general strike.
