The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

GREENPEACE SHUTS DOWN 120 ESSO STATIONS
120 Esso stations were closed down across the UK this morning by more
than 300 Greenpeace anti-war volunteers protesting Esso's power over
the US Government which is fuelling war and global warming. Another
100 people have blockaded the entrance to Esso's UK headquarters in
Surrey. Some of them are now on the roof and have hung a banner.

NEW BRIEFING ON EXXON AND WAR
If George Bush was acting on climate change, cutting use of oil and
diversifying into renewable energy, he wouldn't need to go after
cheap oil in Iraq. Greenpeace's new briefing explains how much
ExxonMobil has to gain from a changed-regime in Iraq.

GET LOCAL WITH MY STOPESSO
We are proud to announce (drum roll) the launch of MY STOPESSO.
This new website feature sets up new discussion lists to enable you
to talk to others in your area so it'll be much easier to protest
locally. You can change your details, change your target Esso
station, order materials and tell us what you've done with them. Go
to http://www.stopesso.com/login.php and log in with your email
address and postcode.

EXXON STANFORD RESEARCH PROJECT
The independence of Exxon's Stanford research programme has come
under fire from Nature magazine. A Stanford Professor has seriously
questioned the project, saying:
'in this instance, Stanford University has shown a marked blindness
to the political agenda of the sponsors, which is a commitment to
foster and expand the use of fossil-fuel energy (over the next ten
years, $100 billion is being spent on oil exploration by ExxonMobil
alone), while holding out the hope that technology will solve the
resultant greenhouse-gas emission problems.'

US CLIMATE PLAN LAUGHABLE
It's been a year since Bush announced the US/Exxon climate policy. On
the anniversary, his officials were scrambling about trying to prove
that voluntary emission reductions by big energy users are a failsafe
way to tackle global warming. The announcement fell way short of
proving anything other than the fact that US emissions are set to go
through the roof.

LSE STUDENTS OCCUPY ESSO'S LONDON OFFICES
As part of an international anti-war-for-oil day of action, 18 LSE
students successfully occupied the 3rd floor of one of Esso's offices
in central London. One student slipped inside through a side entrance
before opening the main door from the inside for the rest of the
students. The group moved up to the third floor and then staged a sit-
in. A further 30 students held banners outside, distributed flyers
and chanted: 'Exxon, Exxon, BP, Shell - take your war and go to
hell!'. The police arrived within 15 minutes and about an hour after
the occupation had started, began to evict people from the building.
The group then went on to protest outside Esso's main offices in
London on Aldwych, handily right next door to the LSE.

EXXON MAN OPENS INSTITUTE OF PETROLUEM WEEK
A senior ExxonMobil executive, Rex Tillerson, opened the IP Week.
Ironically, the topic of the week was 'oil and gas as a future energy
source', but Rex just talked about 'current sources'. No change
there then. We greeted delegates with a little StopEsso quiz, and,
of course, Esso Sucks lollipops to brighten up their morning.

GREENPEACE AUSTRALIA STOPS MOBIL SHIP
Last month, Greenpeace Australia activists locked on to a ship
delivering shale oil to Mobil's Port Stanvac refinery in South
Australia. They unfurled a a huge banner reading 'Mobil + shale oil
= climate change' over the side of the ship. Mobil is the only oil
company in Australia willing to buy the oil, which is produced
through a highly polluting process, significantly increasing
Australia's greenhouse gas emissions, and contributing to worse and
more frequent droughts and bushfires and the destruction of the Great
Barrier Reef.

STOPESSO LAUNCHED IN IRELAND
StopEsso cheerleaders took to the streets of Dublin on Saturday with
the launch of StopEsso Ireland. Protests were also held in Cork,
Limerick and Kilkenny. The flagship protest at Esso's new 'On the
Run' station (we like this new slogan) drew much support from passers-
by and motorists. StopEsso Ireland is supported by Friends of the
Earth (Earthwatch) Ireland; VOICE; Friends of the Irish Environment;
GRIAN and the Green Party. If you're in Ireland and want to get
involved you can email stopesso@dublin.com.

LONDON MARCH ON US EMBASSY
It's two years since Bush dumped Kyoto and, to mark the occasion, the
Campaign against Climate Change is organising its second annual march
from the ExxonMobil headquarters to the US Embassy in London on 29th
March. Check out the website to see if you live along the route and
can join or support the march in some way. For those of you for whom
a 20 mile march is a bit much, join the rally at the Imperial War
Museum at 3.30 pm.

CNN article:-

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/europe/02/24/britain.esso/index.html

This page includes a poll "Do all companies fuel war"

And also includes lies, lies and more lies:-

An Esso spokesman denied Greenpeace's claim that the company was pushing for military action in Iraq.

"People have every right to express their views but it is ludicrous to suggest that ExxonMobil is in any way encouraging a potential war in Iraq," he said.

"The Iraq situation is entirely a matter for governments, not companies to resolve.

"ExxonMobil has not been asked, has not inquired and has not had any discussion with the Bush administration -- or any other government -- regarding military action to gain access to Iraqi oil."

Again may I suggest that a useful place to make an oil type protest would be Shannon, since we are refuelling military planes. Stop the oil and stop the planes?
