We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Ross Higgins, UCDSU Deputy President, makes slur remarks about Working Class.

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 24, 2003 18:18author by Higgins Hater - ucd student Report this post to the editors

Punish the bastard at USI Congress!

The outgoing Deputy President of the UCD SU, Ross Higgins (FG), has yet again revealed his elitism.

Commenting about incoming Deputy President Aidan Regan, Higgins stated that he is not comfortable handing over his office to a "knacker".

This is not the first time that Higgins has made elitist remarks. Earlier in the year the Deputy President described the Admin Building in UCD as the "place where the working class get their grants".

Higgins, who places himself of the Left of Fine Gael, is currently looking for a position in USI. I think that any right-minded left wing student will lobby and push hard so that this careerist elitist fucker doesn't get elected. If you are going to USI congress, vote against him, if you're not tell all delegates from your college to vote against him.

Everyone who's not on the dole? People with certain accents? poor people? Those who buy the Sun and other idiot tabloids? do you need to do manual work to be working class? do you have to be a worker, working in a factory for the big bad boss. how about if you are a tradesman working for himself.

maybe there's no working class left in ireland - only in indonesia.

maybe the whole idea of class is best left behind with industrialism. maybe everybody is a unique individual and focussing on generalisations is just divisive.

the cult of marx was fine for the 19th century factories. but those days are gone.

I know I'm a bit off the original topic: in my book the working class are all those that do not own the means of production, and must sell their labour to make a living.

The working class do not have to wear cloth caps and work in factories or down coalmines! In my book some-one with a law degree working in a large law firm where they are selling their labour to earn a living, and they do not own the means of production, is a member of the working class.

People saying that the "Working Class" is dead are wrong. These people think that the definition of working class are restricted to manual workers, when in reality Marxists say that all those selling their labour are members of the working class. These people also probably think that people with sattelite TV are not working class, if these people were around 100 years ago they would say that people with inside toilets were not workers!!

Class is not determined by income, it is determined by relationship to the means of production.

One of the greatest triumphs of the elite was convincing the working class that they were securely middle class, with university educations and accents, nice cars and consumer goods. But all that crap doesnt matter, it was given and can be as easily taken away when it becomes politically expedient once more. If you dont control production then you are a wage slave. it hasnt changed much in essence since Dickens' time, except that now people naively believe that because they are affluent (for the moment) that they are not 'working' class.

Id consider anyone privaely Educated, and with a fortune to inherit, driving a car while still in college to be working class as well!

author by Gerpublication date Tue Feb 25, 2003 17:14author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Driving a car does not disqualify one from being working class.

Having a small bit of personal wealth does not either. It does definitly effect ones consciouness however as was said above ones wealth alone does not determine class what determines class id whether one owns the means of production.

I would not call someone that has grown up on a small farm working class. They may be worse off than most workers they may get grants and social welfare but they own their means of production and they would be peasants.

One must be carefull in getting into this argument. There are lots of grey areas in this debate. At what point is personal wealth become the means of producton? Is an education constitute the means of production? Do small farmers really own theri own land or are they dependent on the banks?

Ross Higgins is a man of destiny. He quiet rightly disapproves of people talking to him with coarse accents, and proving themselves unable to handle a knife and fork properly(you would think that such people would at least figure out the knife). Anyway just because he disapproves of knackers, that doesnt make him a detestable elitist fuck, it merely indicates that he has standards, which some of my socialist colleagues sometimes mistake for elitism(possibly because they don't meet them.

Jonathan Patton (North Down and Ards Institute of Further and Higher Education Students' Union) is running for that post.

A man who's been Deputy Northern Area Officer, President and Deputy President of his own college, been involved in more Diversity Education programmes than even I have and the hardest worker I've ever seen in an FE (hence the only IT/FE/PLC sabbatical in the North), JP is anything but elitist.

I know what way I'll be voting at Congress.

Mr Higgins' comments are not insulting to the working class, but to everyone he is meant to represent! This idiot has been sitting in his office since july 1st doing nothing but plotting(pinky and the brain style that is) on how to take over the world! I hope the good people in USI have the cope on not to elect this snobby fine gaeler, d.4, badly dressed, lazy good for nothing little know it all into (i was going to say power but lets not kid ourselves) office.

Children, do the right thing and vote for the other guy!

Listen, I know that its hard being a right wing, homosexual Fine gaeler/Wannabee P.D. They're not the most liberal of parties, what with their Facist/Blueshirt history. But that is no reason to attack the decent hard working students of UCD. Its the kids like us that remind you upper class losers what its like to have a personality and have real names like Sean or Siobhan, rather than Turloch or Fiachra or some other ghastly west-Brit term. GET OVER YOURSELF ROSS!!!
Who are you to slag anyone when all that you have done all year is sit in your office and plot Fine Gael's takeover of the world, which frankly, lets be honest, is never going to happen!!
Everyone has a right to a third level education, not just those who come from the Right side of the Tracks or as you might have it the right wing side of the tracks. Your comments are an insult to anyone who has worked their arses off to futher themselves and better their situation.
Imagin a world full of Ross Higgins's. I can. It happenned in Germany, Spain and Italy in the 30's and 40's!!!

Ross has just jumped ship into the Labour Party. It seems the Labour Party are closer to his ideology than FG.He is now rumoured to have got the endorsement of UCD Labours head man and SU president Paul Dillon to run as the 'left' nominee for Finance Officer. Supposedly this is to allow Dillons right hand man Dermot Looney run uncontested for Auditor at this years UCD Labour AGM.Dillon is well known for his shaftings in the Labour Party and CFE. Last year he shafted Dara McCarthy and imposed his protege Dave Kitching as Auditor and candidate for SU Irish Language Officer
