The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

There's nothing to celebrate on Paddy's day!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 24, 2003 17:33author by kokomero Report this post to the editors

Let's wear black on March 17th to make a point

Let's all wear black and bring black flags to Paddy's day marches all ofver Ireland and the world to protest against the genocidal war against the Iraqi people.

There's nothing to celebrate when our government can decide off their own initiative to support this unjust war to ensure cheap oil going into the future.

It's a black time for Ireland and the world so let's send a message out that there'll be no Paddy's day celebration. The government could call off Paddy's day because of a couple of hundred sheep with foot & mouth but they want to give Bush shamrock and have a party to celebrate slaughtering tens or hundreds of innocent human beings ... its disgusting and a disgrace!

To show the world what a sham it is let's all wear black and bring black flags to Paddy's day marches all ofver Ireland and the world to protest against the genocidal war against the Iraqi people, or better still stay away altogether in protest!

Although you would love to see how the blood-thirsty mass media would report a blcak Paddy's day with all of the worlds cameras trained on Ireland!

That is a brillant idea. Maybe if this idea could also spread to the USA particularly NY.

Let the Paddy's Day marches throughout the World become AntiWar marches.

Maybe that way we'll have something to _celebrate_ on Paddy's Day and we'll have shown the world that the Irish and Ireland aren't just a commodity to be trivialised one day a year.

I suggest that we keep Paddys Day marches free of politics - its a family day after all. Have you march/protest by all means, but don't hijack the traditional fun parades. PSF supporters did it in our area a few years ago and most people were sickened by it.

but unfortunately I've decided to give up protesting for Lent.

And I think the scam about Paddy's day not counting is a bit of a cop out.

On the other hand, if I did go protesting I might be interviewed in the crowd by Cliona Ni Buachalla, or another one of those generic RTE, able-to-speak-Irish types, who seem to go in for that sort of thing.

Oh decisions, decisions!

Amanda,

perhaps you should stick to having fun and let mammy and daddy worry about how to organise protests ... no run along and be a good girl!

I don't want to trivialise what is obviously a very grave issue but would it not be an idea to Reclaim Paddy's Day? I can't help smiling at the mental image of an enormous mock-plane being hammered by those great big inflatable tri-colour hammers, the ones with "You'll never beat the Irish" emblazoned on them, all the way down O'Connell Street.

i'm interested in doing tshirts or placards with "1845 - there was no famine, only sanctions" on them, i think irish people mustn't be allowed to have so short a memory.

same boat right here...black every day of the week, but i'm wearing a white piece of cloth around my left arm as a sign of protest until this war is over..
and apparently i'm acting as a steward for important people at the parade on paddys day,
so i might voice some opinions to our good pal bertie

wish me luck...(luck in actually getting near anyone important as a last minute volunteer)

I don’t think that we need to create negative energy with “wearing black, holding a black flag” or taking a day like St. Paddy’s day to protest. If anything we should hold white flags to show the support of peace in our world. I believe to make changes towards peace we must give of ourselves. We must help other people who have less and need our help. I would ask keep St. Paddy’s day, a day of celebration, happiness and joy. Positive energy and being kind can help with many troubles.
