The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Open meeting to form Cork Anti-War Campaign

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday February 07, 2003 00:21author by Fintan Lane Report this post to the editors

Meeting planned to form broad-based campaign in Cork.

An open meeting to form a broad-based Cork campaign against the proposed war on Iraq will be held in the Imperial Hotel at 8pm on Wednesday, 12 February.

The intention of this meeting, which will be publicly advertised, is to draw together activists and concerned citizens to build the
largest possible campaign in the Cork region against the coming war. The function, tactics, and focus of the campaign will be decided entirely by those who attend on the night.

The meeting will be addressed briefly by Caoimhe Butterly (ex-Shannon Peace Camp), James McBarron (Cork Peace Alliance), and Richard Boyd Barrett (Irish Anti-War Movement). Each speaker will talk for approximately 10 minutes and will focus on their experiences and on the practical tasks of an anti-war campaign. The meeting will be primarily organisational in focus.

It seems inevitable that a war against Iraq will be launched in late February or early March, and it is imperative that we act now to build a strong local campaign that will form part of a
significant national movement. Clearly, if every country across Europe and beyond does likewise, we will have a powerful global campaign that will have a real impact and which may force the US and Britain to re-assess their position.

If you are unable to make the meeting on 12 February, please feel free to contact Fintan Lane at 021 4321976 for information on further meetings and activities.

The CPA have booked 2 buses for Saturday and a third is provisionally booked, to be confirmed on Friday afternoon so if you are interested in going, get in contact with Fintan (number in main article) and cough up if possible before Friday afternoon. CPA can't take the financial risk of booking buses that aren't filled and paid for.

The Cork Peace Alliance fully supports this initiative to broaden the anti-war movement in the Cork area. We would urge all activists to attend this meeting on 12 February.
