We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Cowan invites Saddam to Shannon

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday February 05, 2003 10:53author by James McKenna Report this post to the editors

Minister for Foreign Affairs Brian Cowan said today that the Iraqi airforce can refuel at Shannon Airport! He also said the planes would be searched .

Biffo made this faux pas while trying to silther out his admission of not checking the US planes. He said he did not expect the Iraqis to land at Shannon but I would hazard guess that if Saddam has any old jet at all and he hears of Biffos open offer to land and refuel unchecked he will not be able to resist.

The U.S. Embassy Dublin commends these elementary steps to you for your careful consideration:

Assemble all vital documents such as passports, birth and marriage records, vaccination, insurance and bank records in one readily accessible location.

Check to be sure that your passport and any necessary visas are valid and that you are registered at the Embassy with your current address and phone number. If you need to obtain a new passport or to update your registration, please do so at the Embassy as soon as possible. The Embassy is open for passport renewal services at the following times and days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, between 8.30 - 11.30 a.m. Please note that we are closed to the public on Wednesday and on Irish and American holidays.

Visa processing can take several weeks. Immediate family members should keep their U.S. visas current, and apply for visas with as much time in advance of planned travel as possible. Please refer to Embassy Dublin's webpage at www.usembassy.ie for up-to-date information on how to apply for U.S. visas.

Make or update as necessary a complete inventory of your household effects, in duplicate.

Maintain an adequate supply of food, water, and necessary medications in your home. Make sure your car is in good working order. Keep the gas tank full and check oil, coolant, tires, and battery.

We do not want American citizens to become unduly alarmed. These are precautionary measures only. Given the potential for acts of violence, terrorism, or anti-American demonstrations, we believe it is important for all citizens to maintain readiness for all possibilities in case of an emergency. We will promptly inform you of any significant developments and advise you accordingly. The Department of State encourages all American citizens residing abroad to register their presence and obtain up- to-date information on security conditions at Embassy Dublin, tel: 011-353-1-6687122, www.usembassy.ie, 42 Elgin Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. Please direct any queries to the following email address: ACSDublin@state.gov

Cowen actually said on Morning Ireland that there are no bullets in
the US soldier's guns while they are passing through Shannon and so it
was therefore alright. He was trying to imply we were still neutral.

By similiar faulty logic, bombs and missiles are not actually weapons
until the instant they explode.
