Colleges hit election mode - will the Left for once be organised?

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday January 23, 2003 11:55author by Lefty student Report this post to the editors

or will infighting on the left let in more hacks?

This is just a plea to left wing students everywhere to get organised and stop people like Aonghus Hourihane getting elected!

I've been watching this website for a while and it seems much of the time people on the left spend more time attacking each other than people like Aonghus Hourihane or other right wing Students' Union officers.

Surely this is pointless. We have bigger fish to fry.

Election time is coming up in Colleges around the country. We can work together to get as many people elected to SU's around the country or we can choose to fight each other. And thus let more FFers into positions of influence.

There's been a lot of talk on indymedia about "hacks" in students unions and how they aren't interested in students. Fair enough, many (not necessarily all) are. But why are they there? Because they were elected. Why did they get elected? Because they were better organised than the left.

So let's get organised, and let's get organised now. The alternative is more of the same, with a conservative Students Union leadership and those of us who want a more progressive SU on the outside shouting in.

Yeah - they'll be electing the Environmental Officer for USI at the environmental conference in Dublin on Feb 15/16. anyone at all interested in going for this? We could get a bit of support I'm sure....

All for left unity but too often those who claim to be for it are out for hegemony themselves. Take the SP/SY, every other group on the left is 'inferior' to them. They try to take over campaigns by any means. They also destroy them.

In UCD they turn people off SU activities with their childish stunts and are always out to gut the rest of the left.

Their latest is to oppose attempts to revive the annual Kevin Barry march, this used to be organised by UCD SU. The SY say it is sectarian. Not only do they oppose it but they say wont allow UCD SU to have anything to do with it.

This will help FF no end.

They have no idea if what democracy is.

where and when did SY in UCD come out against that annual march? It's just another lie and slur from some anonymous figure.

When have SP member in UCD ruined campaigns? We have built up the CFE along with other genuine activists. To deny this is simply wrong. We never attempted to 'take over' any campaign in ucd. I think that some people may confuse arguing a certain point as 'taking over' a campaign!

The childish thing is to make anonymous attacks and make up blatent lies.

'It's just another lie and slur from some anonymous figure.'

Would OK please use his/her real name?

Can we take it then that the Socialist Party support the Kevin Barry march?

ps Trotwatch may well be a stirrer but a clear answer would help.

- We have built up the CFE along with other genuine activists.

Which 'other genuine activists' did you build?

OK is Oisín Kelly there is no secret about that.

The other genuine activists are people in Socialist Alternative, some members of the Labour Party, SWP, and many more independents.

The first I heard of a 'Kevin Barry March' was yesterday when I read it here. Its simply not happening, everyone I've talked today said they never heard of such a march either. Its not an issue in UCD.

I feared you had taken a vow of silence. If you have your way then there definitely will be no Kevin Barry memorial march.

Just answer the question. Will you support a revival of the Kevin Barry march as a UCDSU event? Or do you see it as being sectarian?

wouldnt be opposed to a kevin barry march meself - except isnt the FF youth out in UCD called the Kevin Barry Cumann? dunno if i'd agree with marching with them but anyhow, if the any of the socialist or anarchist groups oppose it, then i suppose thats their perogative isnt it? but if its a march that no-longer has any relevance, why bother reviving it? would an auld anti-fees march or anti-war march not be more important and inline with current feelings?

and trotwatch, given that u call urself after an old left-bashing anarcho paper would you partake in such a march? what happened to "no gods, no masters, no idols, no state?" i wonder. or maybe u are just a shit stirrer, a memeber of the labour party perhaps? or were u dumped by a socialist and feel the need to take it out all lefties?

"...or will infighting on the left let in more hacks?"

But isn't there such a thing as 'left wing' hacks? Surely they should be kept out aswell!
