It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Tie a coloured ribbon round an Eyre Square tree, is the title of a campaign to help save the 90 trees due for the chop in Eyre Square in Galway City Centre.

To date the Galway Environmental Alliance has been running a highly successful and highly visible campaign to ‘tie a coloured ribbon round an Eyre Square tree’. All of the condemned trees in the square now have numerous coloured ribbons tied to them. There has been a huge response from the general public.

Campaign Song to the tune of ‘tie a yellow ribbon’.

Tie a coloured ribbon round an Eyre Square tree,
If you love the trees,
Could you tie one please?,
If you could tie a coloured ribbon round an Eyre Square tree,
Then you’ll make your mark,
In Kennedy Park,
And strike a blow for Democracy,
If you could tie a coloured ribbon round an Eyre Square tree.

It is of paramount importance that the trees in eyre square be preserved. This is not because trees look lovely are are all round nice things in general, it is because all life on the planet should be treated with respect.
Humans are inseperable from nature, we are intrinsically linked through flows of matter and energy with all life on the planet.By destroying the environment we are ultimately destroying ourselves. Life on the planet is not under threat from human activity, life will survive but the environment left for humans to live in will not be cosy at all. By felling trees we cut off our oxygen supply.
By felling trees we destroy the natural habitats for numerous animal species.
