We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Support Irish Neutrality- Oppose the War in Iraq

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday January 15, 2003 11:39author by Republican - Sinn Fein Report this post to the editors

Sinn Féin oppose war in Iraq and the Governments breaking of Irish neutrality

“Irish complicity in the war build-up must end” – Ó Snodaigh

Sinn Féin has pledged its full support to the growing movement against the war on Iraq. International Affairs spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has said the Dáil must be recalled as a matter of urgency and that the government must take their head out of the sand and respond to the Irish public's very real concerns on this grave issue. Deputy Ó Snodaigh will lead a Sinn Féin delegation to the Shannon Peace Camp next week.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

“Irish complicity in the war build-up must end. Brian Cowen’s Ministerial authorisation of overflights and landing of both US military aircraft and civilian aircraft chartered to carry US troops and supplies are in violation of Article 2 of the Hague Convention Respecting the Rights and Duties of Neutral Powers and Persons in Case of War on Land, which states that belligerents are forbidden to move troops or convoys of either munitions of war or supplies across the territory of a neutral power. Sinn Féin reiterates our demand for the immediate suspension of such authorisation and the recalling of the Dáil to discuss this very grave matter.

"The government must take their head out of the sand and respond to the Irish public's very real concerns on this.

“For months now Sinn Féin has been calling for a debate in the Dáil on this issue of crucial national and international importance. But the government – in its typical arrogance – has refused. Their Nice campaign guarantee that they would defend Irish neutrality was clearly just another in a series of broken promises. We therefore also continue to call for neutrality to be enshrined in the Constitution and in legislation.

“Sinn Féin fully supports the anti-war movement, the peace camp at Shannon Airport, and the national anti-war mobilisation on February 15. We look forward to playing our part, together with the other progressive peoples of the US and Europe – and, indeed the world over – on this most important issue.” ENDS

Is this article written by "Republican Sinn Féin" or "Republican" who happens to be a member of Sinn Féin?

Anyway it's a change for the Provos to be against war, some of us are old enough to remember their paper An Phobhlacht had a weekly column called "War News" which detailed the provos "successes" in blowing the heads of Brits and others. Rumour has it that they still have an Army led by an "Army Council" that includes several well known SF members. Tiocfaidh ár War!

Nice to see O Snodaigh pontificating like this. I wonder what his position would be on violent attacks on local burglars. Isn't he the man with the amazing knack of "recovering" stolen goods? Or was that some other shinner?

It doesn't mean you forgot your differences, but in a single issue campaign against the gulf war, comments like these only cause division.

Make your criticisms regarding other issues on other threads.

No Pat these people are right. Violence is violence is violence, to paraphrase. The Zapitistas have an army. This must condemned as must violence of the anarchists and the republicans during the Spanish civil war. This must also be condemned. These are not just cheap shots by people with absolutely no support among the working classes but revolutionaries who never will fight aginst imperialism or for working people.

Thank heavens for our much-vaunted neutrality.

Wasn't De Valera the only head of government in the entire world to send a letter of condolence to the German ambassador, mourning the death of Adolf Hitler?

Yes, Dev (Who, like the rest of the world at the time was unaware of the Holocaust at the time of Hitler's death) did sign the book of condolences.
Not very smart.

No one who starts a war should be officially mourned though there is of course case for personal sympathy for innocent relatives.

What strikes me is how the Bush family at the time didn't appreciate his passing.

Sam and Prescott Bush made a fortune out of Hitler.

They were indicted in 1942 for arming him.

Funny how helping to create one of history's greatest monsters wouldn't be a barrier to having two direct descendants in the White House (even if only one was actually elected)

Democracy is great... according to 51% of people who expressed a preference....
