Nearly 3,000 luxury cars went down with their ship in the English Channel after two vessels collided. The Norwegian-registered TRYcolor came off worst, along with a cargo of BMWs, Volvos and Saabs being delivered to Southampton on the southern coast of England. They never made it to their destination, after the car carrier came into contact with a container ship.
The TRYcolour was en route from Zeebrugge in Belgium when it ploughed into theother vessel off the Kent coast. This is one of busiest shipping lanes on the planet. The TRYcolour's owners have been warned they are ultimately responsible for the clean-up operation as well as the raising of the wreck. Bad weather however is hampering salvage efforts ; the collision itself happened amid thick fog. The mainly Filipino crew of the TRYcolour abandoned ship once their vessel developed difficulties, and all are safe and well. The TRYcolour was also carrying around 2,000 tons of fuel oil on board. A barrier has been putaround the wreck to try to keep any pollution to a minimum.
