The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

War on trial: Tulla district court, High Court, UK High Court,...

Support peace activists

You are cordially invited to attend to the trial of Eoin Dubsky (that's me!) at Tulla Distric Court, next Wednesday 18 December, at 10.30 am. Below is some information about the trial and other related stuff including: High Court developments, UK war plans on trial, HP/Compaq Galway nuke R & D, and more...

# Shannon spray-painting trial - 18 Dec

Tulla is a village situated on the main Ennis Scariff road in Co. Clare, not far from Shannon Airport. Bus to Ennis or Shannon is probably best
best, then taxi/hitch further (there are only two bus services a week to Tulla). If you'd like to stay the night before in Shannon let me know and I'll see if I can work something out.

I would be MOST GRATEFUL if you could come along, though I understand that its out of the way, and the middle of the week. The way the authorities are behaving, I think there'll be more court cases in the new year for people resisting state lawlessness and violence... so no worries! :-)

# Anti-war parties

1.) The Irish Anti-War Movement have having a fundraiser gig in the Temple Bar Music Centre the same day. They aim to raise money for their demonstrations and campaign materials, and have a get-together of people before the Christmas break.
Acts: The Kings Mistake, Zrazy, Sevens, Mary Stokes, Driver, Hazel O Conor, Sonny Condell, Jennifer Lee & DJ Phantom.
Venue: Temple Bar Music Centre. Doors Open 7.30pm til late (18/12/02).
Tickets e12/10 concession. Available from Temple Bar Music Centre or tel: 087-6329511

2.) Colm Olwill is also organizing a party in Dublin and has kindly agreed to let us make it an "after-trial" party! I don't have details
about acts for the night, but the venue is Mother Redcaps at Christ Church, Dublin 2, and the date is Friday, 20 December.

# High Court judicial review stalled

On January 20, 2003 we're back in the Irish High Court for our motion for discovery of orders made by the State in relation to overflights and
refueling. Basically, we asked them to show us some docs so we could say "look judge, this is the kind of thing we need to stop"... but they said basically "no, we're not going to tell you what we're doing".

Remember, the High Court judicial review is just about military flights relevant to war in Afghanistan. The High Court won't look at the
legality of US armed attacks against that country or Iraq.

# CND (UK) go to the High Court over Iraq war

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) took its opposition to war on Iraq to the High Court on Monday. The group asked the court to declare
that it would be contrary to international law for the UK to go to war against Iraq without a fresh United Nations resolution. CND claims a UN
resolution calling on Saddam Hussein to disarm or face "serious consequences" cannot be used to justify an invasion. See Guardian Article for more: http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,850077,00.html

John Fitzgibbon, who has been campaigning against the sanctions on Iraq since they began, tried to take a similar case to the High Courts here in Ireland (represented by solicitor Paul O'Shea who's doing my cases too) a few weeks ago but wasn't allowed. The Supreme Court wouldn't listen to him either. Let's hope it works out for CND in Britain! :-)

# HP/Compaq in Galway do nuclear weapons R & D

Confidential documents, seen by the Irish Examiner newspaper, reveal Compaq in Galway has contracts to make supercomputers for the French
nuclear weapons programme as well as all three US nuclear weapons labs Los Alamos, Sandia and Lawrence Livermore. There's a webpage about this
with lots of links to related materials online at:
http://indymedia.ie/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=20303&start=0

# Finally....

I can't remember where I found this poem (somewhere on the internet...), but I thought I'd share it with you to finish off this email:

They are all children when they sleep. There is no war in them. They open their hands and breathe in the slow rhythm given to humans by heaven.

Whether soldiers, statesmen, servants, or masters they purse their lips like small children and they all half-open their hands. stars stand
watch then and the arch of the sky is hazed over for a few hours when no one will harm another.

If only we could talk with each other then, when hearts are like half-open flowers. Words would push their way in like golden bees.

God, teach me sleep's language.

Best of Luck on Wednesday Eoin. I hope I will be able to make it.....is there anything specific I can do to help? Does such a town as Tulla really exist? Maybe it's a State ploy, and Tulla is a pseudonym for an Intergalactic Stargate passage which connects sub-White House/Pentagon dungeons (where one has to look at Sally Jessy Raphael, Jenny Jones, Ricki Lake, Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Springer et. al. for ones' entire incarceration) with Ireland,- and especially designed for those who dare to question the imperial motives of the 'land of the free and home of the brave'; for those who have the gall to think and conciously act upon their belief that love, peace, disarmament etc. are beautiful virtues and achievable goals worth non-violently fighting for; and for those who wish to defend our very own constitution and citizens, thereby defending our national cornerstone and symbol of freedom after enduring 7 centuries of tyranny

When you go into court, you are putting yourself in the hands of people that weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty.
