We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Democracy Now! Interview w/ Caoimhe Butterly in Jenin

On Friday Israeli troops shot dead a head United Nations official in Jenin. Irish peace activist Caoimhe Butterly was also shot and remains hospitalized. On Monday, the New York-based radio and TV show Democracy Now talked to Butterly in the Jenin hospital.

An Israeli solider on Friday shot dead a top United Nations official who was inside a clearly marked United Nations compound.

British citizen Iain John Hook has become the first United Nations worker to be killed since the second intifada began two years ago.

Israeli officials originally reported that Iain Hook was caught in gun crossfire. But their story changed over the weekend, when Israeli radio reported an Israeli solider shot directly at him.

Now the official Israeli story is that Palestinian gunmen fired on Israeli soldiers from within the UN compound. Soldiers thought Hook was holding a gun and opened fire. It was probably his cell phone. The London Independent is reporting the Israeli army ignored repeated telephone calls from Hook pleading for a ceasefire so he could evacuate staff from the UN compound where he died.

The United Nations also says the Israeli Army's story is "incredibly incorrect." The UN Relief and Works Agency Paul McCann said: "We know that we had control of [the compound], there were no militants inside it, and there was absolutely no firing coming from inside it."

The United Nations also says Israeli soldiers blocked an ambulance from getting to Hook after he was shot.

Iain John Hook headed a multi-million dollar project to rebuild the Jenin refugee camp after Israeli troops razed it in April.

An Irish peace activist who is living in Jenin, Caoimhe Butterly, was also shot on Friday. The United Nations, Ireland and Britain have all called for independent investigations into both shootings.

Israel has a history extending to well before 1948 of revising it to suit its goal(s). For example, regarding the holocaust, when I first heard or read about it, some 6 million people had been killed by the Nazis. That included gypsies, Catholics, those with mental or physical defects, etc. and Jews. As time went on, the number of those other than Jews somehow was decreased and the number of Jews increased until the report was that the holocaust killed 6 million Jews. Most of us have seen gaunt figures of people being rescued from Nazi concentration camps but they were not labeled, were they?
With collusion from LBJ and MacNamara, whose administration covered it up, Israel's very deliberate attack against the USS Liberty, with the intent of sinking her and killing its crew, almost succeeded. Although many sailors were killed and wounded and the ship had a 40 foot hole blown in its hull by an Israeli torpedo it managed to limp into port, no thanks to the US Navy whose planes were called back during that assault. That sad affair was labeled mistaken identity.
Israel has a history of lies and terror: it continually moves into Palestinian territory to build more settlements, even as it denies doing so. It shuts off water and electricity to the Palestinians at will. It . . , but the list is much too long and God's chosen people are just too much for a decent world.
