The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Thank Lockdowns for the Worst Budget in History Sat Nov 22, 2025 13:00 | Will Jones
We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

I was just on to Eason's, and its been deferred until the 9th of December.
(It may also be sold out)
I just rang Hanna's and asked about the Micheal Moore talk this evening and
was told it was 'sold out'. Perhaps she did hear my question and assumed I
was inquiring about the book?
So I rang the Royal College of Surgeons and they said the talk was cancelled.
So now I am really confused.
Maybe the talk is taking place somewhere else.
There's no title on the ticket, its just Michael Moore, author of Stupid Whie Men, in conversation with Hugh Linehan, Irish Times. I don't know if there will be tickets available at the door, you could give Easons, Hanna's, or the Irish Times a call, and see if they have any left or what the arrangements are. I haven't been into the College of Surgeons so I don't know what the capacity is.
Do you have to have a ticket to get into the talk?
And what exactly is the title of the talk? Any other
info would be appreciated
Very good, but could have been edited a bit as goes off on a few tangents. Otherwise recommended.
"Bowling for Columbine" opened in theaters here last Friday, and I was pleased to see that Michael Moore has produced an excellent film that quite competently examines some serious issues in American culture.
At the root of Moore's theme is the cultivation of fear in American media and politics. This is particularly relevant at this point in time... just weeks after a nationwide election where the Republican party won a stunning majority by successfully marketing fear to the electorate... and the Democratic opposition presented simply no viable argument or alternative.
America's suburbs are the Republican party's voting strongholds, and are also our nation's primary repositories of cultural FEAR. The insular nature of suburban developments (often themed as country clubs, English estates, "Old South" plantations, and the like) both represents and perpetuates a fear of "others"--other races, other class identifications, lower income levels--and for an individual or family to choose to live in one of these communities is an act of solidarity with the American ruling class.
Michael Moore doesn't quite go into all that, but the film touches on it enough for this American to gain substantive understanding about how the party of the ruling class--the Republican party--markets itself to middle class and working class people and gets them to vote against their own material interests.
George W. Bush isn't just ripping apart the world--he's simultaneously ripping apart what little infrastructure we have to protect our poor, our workers, our environment... and even our independent entrepreneurs.
So. Please go see this film. Mr. Moore's film is hardly flawless, but it provides important insights.
Best regards,
good soldier
