I would have thought most people were aware Sparts was shorthand for Spartacist League. Just like we have Shinners, Swimmies, Millies, Sticks, Erps etc. Oddly I don't think anyone has come up with a shorthand for the WSM......

'Sparts' are spartacists, a group founded (if memory serves) in Germany between the world wars.
The party line (literally) is that they are internationalist communists, i.e. Trotskyists.
They differ from Leninists because Leninists build parties and 'vanguards' and the like on a country-by-country basis whereas Spartacists/Trotskyists are internationalist. A bit of an obscure difference, but as far as I'm aware that's it.
Both Leninists (e.g. the SWP) and Trotskyists can suffer from bouts of delusion, convinced as they are that not only is a revolution eternally imminent, but that the workers want nothing more than to be led by a 'vanguard'. As a result, tiny differences between the two can become blown out of all proportion due to their implications down the line if one accepts this logic. This results in the sort of nitpicking evident here for example.
On an interesting side note, the Spartacists are in favour of defending the 'remaining worker's states'; so you have to be in favour of the wonderful worker's paradises of North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba and China to join the gang.

An Erp is a member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party. Founded by Seamus Costello out of the old 'Official' IRA in the mid-70s. Costello also founded the INLA about the same time. Costello said a lot of very interesting things and was a genuine working class revolutionary so of course, the Stickies shot him. After that the Erps never really recovered. There's still a few about Dublin and you can get their newspaper, Starry Plough if you look hard enough.
There is a Commemoration to mark the 25th anniversary of Seamus Costello's murder on this Sunday 6th October in Bray. It is at St Peter's Cemetary (on the right as you enter Bray) at 2.30pm and there is a social event afterwards.
The commemoration is organised by the Seamus Costello Memorial Committee and one of the speakers in Tony Gregory (there are a couple more too, names escape me at present).

Actually the Spartacist League has nothing to do with Rosa Luxemburg's German Spartacusbund. The Spartacist League was founded as a split from the American SWP (nothing to do with the Irish/British version) in the 1960s. Their Irish organisation, mainly made up of Americans, is called Spartacist Group Ireland.
They are a Trotskyist organisation. In fact they are like a bad drawing of a Trotskist organisation.
Their main political activity consists of hassling other left wing groups. Amusingly they publish a bulletin called "Hate Trotskyism, Hate the Spartacist League" which contains polemics made by other tiny splinter groups against them.
A Spartoid accosted me on the anti-war march last week. I don't mind people asking me to buy their publications and if the journal is not too embarrasing to be seen with I will usually purchase it.
Anyhow this Spart approaches at speed and rudely thrusts his organ (fnarr, fnarr) into my face while shouting 'Spartacist Ireland - Anti-Traveller Laws - Womens Right to Abortion, etc.'. I had to divert to go around the proferred magazine. Then I told him to 'Fuck Off'. Several times. He stared at me and then burst into a strange cackling laugh before moving on to the next victim. A friend also followed the same policy with a female of the species, with like effect.
This would appear to be a profitable and enjoyable method of dispelling the menace. At the risk of being called 'pro-capitalist', of course.
