Clearly intended as a repudiation of Operation Raise the Colours, Sadiq Khan's New Year's fireworks in London lectured us on what "the real England" means. It was painfully predictable, says Clarissa Hard.

Some dismiss the current wave of nostalgia as mere rose-tinted 'shitstalgia'. But in a world that only ever seems to get worse, people are right to yearn for the simple comforts of yesteryear, says Andy Simpson.

commemoration to honour the men and women who fought for Irish Freedom

THE ROLE OF WOMEN who fought in the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence and the
Civil War is to be highlighted on Easter Monday as part of the ceremonies organised
by the Dublin North Inner City Folklore Project at Liberty Hall and the GPO.

At 11.30am on Easter Monday, 1st April 2013, a replica of a flag hoisted by Molly
O?Reilly of the Irish Citizen Army at Liberty Hall in 1916 will be raised by a niece
of Molly?s.

Men and women dressed in period costume and uniforms followed by people carrying
photographs of the men and women will then lead a parade from Liberty Hall to the
GPO for a wreath-laying ceremony by Constance Corcoran, daughter of Molly O?Reilly
who?s, mother was a member of the City Hall garrison and Mrs Steenson, whose mother
was a member of the GPO/Clery?s garrison. An address will given by Nora Comiskey
from the 1916-1921 Club. Descendants of the men and women who served from 1916 to
1923 will take part.

The community-based North Inner City Folklore Project wants the events to be
non-party political and is appealing to men and women to turn out on Easter Monday
and pay tribute to the heroic men and women. ?We want to honour not just the famous
but the not-so-famous men and women?

Hi Terry (and Malachy) !

Myself and a few others will be in the area today on 'other business' (!) and we should hopefully find the time to attend your commemoration.
Slán go foill anois,
Sharon.
