offsite link Why Governments Love Raising the Minimum Wage ? Because it?s Really a Tax Mon Dec 22, 2025 15:36 | Mark Ellse
Why do governments of all parties love raising the minimum wage? It may seem generous, but really it's a tax, says Mark Ellse. The low-paid worker keeps just one sixth of the increase. 85% goes to the government.

Time: 7pm
Venue: Eyre Square
Date: 1st May

To celebrate May day and the 200th day on Eyre Square, Occupy Galway will be hosting a Citizen’s assembly at 7pm in Eyre Square. All are welcome to attend and participate. The topic of the assembly will be “The EU Fiscal Treaty, a good deal for Irish workers?” This is the most important decision the Irish people will be asked to make for a generation. The Government will launch its yes campaign on Monday and are already saying that the alternative to voting yes will be much worse. Many groups, unions and economists are lining up to disagree with these scare tactics. Many of these groups have been invited to attend and everyone will get a chance to speak.

This may be the only public arena for people to air their opinions and inform themselves and others on the importance and consequences of this vote. We have to work together to ensure that we are all walking into this with our eyes open.

Music, entertainment and information will be available in the camp throughout the day and all are welcome to attend.

We have made the treaty available as an audio file and it can be downloaded from here http://soundcloud.com/occupygalway2-0 We have also added a section for the treaty on our website where we will post resources and links.
