 REPUBLICAN NETWORK FOR UNITY SPOKESPERSON, MARTIN ÓG MEEHAN has described as scandalous recent house raids in Armagh, Fermanagh and West Belfast by the counter-insurgency agency, RUC/PSNI. Meehan said: ‘This evening a number of RNU Activists in West Belfast had their front doors smashed to bits and homes torn apart by the so-called Civil Police Service. Instead of their children experiencing a peaceful Christmas, they witnessed heavily armed and aggressive RUC/PSNI men seizing wrapped gifts belonging to them. The impact of these raids are that young children will be unable enjoy festivities. The excuse given by members of the ‘Serious Crime Branch’ were that the raids were in relation to an ‘attack’ last week on the Alliance Party Headquarters in Belfast. While the local media broadcast images of jovial and friendly Peelers, working-class families across the Six Counties are exposed to the unchanged nature of British Policing’. Meehan concluded; ‘The targeting of Republican families is nothing new. It is obvious that the cosmetic make-over of the RUC has failed. We still live in a Police State that will ruthlessly attempt to stamp out resistance to British rule, Stormont and their apologists. Regardless of attempts to frustrate RNU, our Network will continue to highlight the plight of Political Prisoners in Maghaberry and expose British Policing in Ireland’.
