A person identifying as Esther McVey told Mike Graham on Talk earlier this week that "Net Zero was a dud". Surely this could not be the Esther McVey who spent years inflicting it on the British public, says Chris Morrison.

USI calls for the renegotiation of the Croke Park deal. Wages too high on campus!

category national | education | news report author Sunday December 12, 2010 15:47author by FEE Report this post to the editors

Shocking call from the Union of Students in Ireland.
USI President Gary Redmond with his fellow Fianna Failers, UCD.
USI President Gary Redmond with his fellow Fianna Failers, UCD.

On Saturday 11th December, USI National Council passed a motion allowing the USI leadership to call for the renegotiation of the Croke Park Deal, so that public-sector pay can be further cut in the hope of protecting students’ frontline services.

The motion was proposed by UCD Student’s Union, who recently released a statement calling for the Croke Park Deal to be scrapped.
That statement can be read at http://www.ucdsu.ie/site/view/457/

By passing this motion, USI are tacitly accepting that ordinary people, rather than the wealthy, must bear the cost of the present economic crisis. The student movement should stand in solidarity with workers, both public and private-sector, the unemployed etc. in resisting the government’s cutback agenda, rather than allowing the government to divide and conquer.

It is clear now more than ever that Gary “Vote Fianna Fáil for Jobs” Redmond and his friends in the Students’ Unions cannot be trusted to lead a real fightback on behalf of students. It is imperative that students organise independently on a grassroots basis to resist austerity.

I mean, why shouldn't there be a MAXIMUM wage in the public sector??

I am against people on 30k or less being touched (i.e frontline workers, nurses etc) but I think fatcats on 100k+ should not be protected. That includes our favourite overpaid useless politicians, paperbugs, penpushers and non teaching academics.

If they hit people on 196 euro a week for 8 euro and 10 euro childrens allowance etc then why should people of any kind on 100k be spared and why should brian cowen still earn more than barack obama and retire on a huge pension?

Break the croke park deal, set a minimum of 30k below which people will be left alone and a maximum public service wage of 100k. If people don't like it they can leave. plenty of highly qualified people looking for jobs on the dole. stamp out the self serving paper pushing overpaid bureaucrats and paperbugs and replace them with a more lean and efficient and sustainable civil service and a few extra computers.

But Leave frontline staff on 30k or less alone. those folk provide valuable and important services and actually DO REAL THINGS not just putting more expensive and paralysing bureaucracy between people and their just entitlements

And as for the whole pension scheme trough, everyone should just get the basic standard state pension scheme. thats it. From Brian cowen to the person on the dole. After that, you are on your own. no tax breaks no nothing. Thats how it needs to be. Why will bertie Ahern get over 100k for the rest of his life for ruining the country?? it's absurd. then think of all the other parasites getting pensions from the state like this for what? What did these people do to directly merit such special treatment.??

But first and foremost CLOSE ALL TAX LOOPHOLES, large pension fund tax write offs for the wealthy, block capital flight, burn the banks and bondholders, and take away passports from tax exiles and raise corporation tax to a fair level whilst leaving it competitive.

Everyone can see what we really need to do but nobody has the guts to do it. Unlike my suggestions, USI are voting on a right wing policy pushed by FF but they will attack the poorer sub 30k band most and fatcat administrators and TD's will escape as usual.

However as part of a system wide rationalisation, the croke park deal will inevitably go anyway. Better if it does so for the right reasons not some FF attack on frontline services whilst protecting high paid paperbugs
