Come To Our Walking Tour.

The 1%

We have all heard of the ‘golden circle’. We all know that there is
one law for the rich and another law for the rest of us. But did you
know that just 1% of the population are estimated to own at least 34%
of the wealth of the country? Property developers, landlords,
bankers, barristers, media tycoons and politician are amongst the 1%
that own so much, but contribute so little.

More Cutbacks? Make the 1% Pay?

In next December’s budget the government are going to further slash
funding for health, education, housing and social welfare. Yet again
the poor are to be made pay for the greed of the rich. It’s time the
1% started paying for the mess that they have created.

The Heartland of the Golden Circle

Like nowhere else in Ireland the districts of Dublin 2 and Dublin 4
are littered with the landmarks of the power and wealth of the 1%.
Banks, private mansions and corporate headquarters all sit side by
side in the heartland of the golden circle

A Political Tour – A Demand for Justice

On Saturday, October 9th, the 1% Network is organising a ‘political
walking tour’ through Dublin 1 and Dublin 2 to highlight the gross
inequality that lies at the heart of Irish society and to demand that
the 1% pay their fair share. Stops along the tour will include the
residences of billionaire tax dodgers, the headquarters of failed
banks and the offices of the lobby groups that protect the interest of
the 1%. The tour will assemble at the Wolfe Tone monument at the
Merrion Row corner of Stephens Green at 1pm on October 9th. The route
of the tour is about 3km long and should last about two hours. All
are welcome.

What is the 1% Network?
The 1% network is a coalition of socialist groups which has come
together to oppose the cutback agenda of the government and to promote
a socialist alternative to the current socio-economic system.
Organisations within the 1% Network include éirígí, Irish Socialist
Network, Seomra Spraoi and the Workers Solidarity Movement. Many of
these groups took part in the ‘Anti-Capitalist Block’ demonstrations
in Dublin City Centre in May of 2010.

Why does the term ‘1%’ refer to?
The name of the coalition was chosen to highlight the fact that just
1% of the population control in excess of 34% of the wealth of the
country. Property developers, landlords, bankers, barristers, media
tycoons and politicians are amongst the 1% that own so much, but
contribute so little.

What does the 1% Network aim to achieve?

The staggering wealth and influence of the 1% is rarely mentioned in
mainstream political discussions or the corporate media. At a time
when the government is implementing savage cutbacks in healthcare,
education, social welfare and housing the 1% remain virtually
untouched. The 1% Network aims to highlight the existence of Ireland’s
super rich and build a popular demand for them to contribute their
fair share.
